Role The Water Plant Operator position is an entry‑level operator position staffed at the City’s water treatment and water reclamation plants. Duties include the basic operation, maintenance, and control of one or more water treatment or reclamation facilities and/or well sites and lift stations; monitoring operations, canvassing processes, and performing various functions in process control. Work is performed under close supervision.
This position will be open until filled; applicants will be reviewed as they are received.
Compensation & Hiring Bonus
FLSA non‑exempt
– overtime for hours over 40 in a week.
A Grade 314
– hourly salary between $24.96 – $37.44.
Hiring Bonus:
$2,000 total – $1,000 after 30 days of employment, and $1,000 after 6 months of employment. Must be an active employee at the time of award. Current regular status City of Glendale employees are not eligible.
Benefits
Benefits package becomes effective the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment.
10.5 paid holidays per year plus 12 hours of holiday special leave per year for cultural or religious holidays.
Vacation leave: 5.33 hrs per pay period (138 hrs / 17.25 days per year); increases to 6.12 hrs per pay period after 5 years; caps at 7.6 hrs per pay period after 10 years.
Sick leave: 4.4 hrs per pay period (114 hrs / 14.25 days per year).
Retirement: Participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Current contribution rate 12.00%.

Responsibilities
Operate, maintain, monitor, and control all water plant and reclamation plant process equipment.
Obtain water samples and perform water or wastewater lab tests.
Conduct lab tests to determine proper process and operational controls.
Implement basic treatment and operational changes to meet water quality standards.
Adjust pump settings as needed.
Monitor and adjust flows through wells, booster pumps, zone splits, and reservoirs.
Operate telemetry and computerized process monitoring equipment.
Make equipment adjustments, minor repairs, and prepare problem reports.
Read and interpret meters, gauges, and instruments; enter daily readings into computer databases.
Inventory, estimate usage, and prepare orders for supplies; ensure quality of material received.
Resolve water and reclamation complaint calls.
Unload and store hazardous chemicals, change chlorine cylinders as necessary, batch and mix hazardous chemical solutions, and transfer bulk storage to day tanks.
Record daily activities in a logbook.
Assist with public relations by answering inquiries and complaints and giving plant tours.
Occasionally assist other water treatment personnel in well site maintenance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience or training in operation/maintenance of a water or wastewater utility or other industrial fields.
Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 1 Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s certification (or equivalent from a reciprocal jurisdiction) at time of application.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may substitute for each year of required education.
Must obtain an ADEQ Grade 2 Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s Certificate within 12 months of hire.
Rotating shift work required to cover weekends and holidays; flexible hours, overtime, and seasonal variations may be necessary.
Must successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment and ongoing testing per City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post‑offer physical assessment is required.
Knowledge & Skills
Basic operations, methods, practices, techniques, and servicing requirements of water and reclamation facilities.
Safe work practices for electrical and mechanical equipment and water/reclamation plants.
Recognize treatment process changes and demands.
Operate telemetry and computerized process control systems.
Operate a computer.
Keep neat and accurate records.
Read and interpret meters, charts, gauges and recording devices.
Understand and follow written and oral instructions and regulations.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Work requires sustained climbing, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds and walking. Some exposure to hazardous chemicals, voltages, and adverse weather. Hazards can be controlled through proper safety precautions.
