Overview NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is the community hospital of choice for residents of East Harlem, northern Manhattan, and neighboring communities. Duties & Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Administrator of Laboratory Services, provides on‑site operational oversight of laboratories, exercising oversight of primary scientific and technical responsibilities to ensure patient‑centered, cost‑effective, quality care and a culture of safety. In the Administrator’s absence, assumes the Administrator’s responsibilities.
Provides oversight for departmental activities and manages and directly supervises all technical and service activities of the laboratory.
Collaborates with the Administrator of Laboratory Services to advance the Laboratory’s programs and initiatives and set the department’s objectives and operational and financial performance goals.
Interacts with regulatory bodies and ensures compliance with inspection outcomes.
Develops uniform internal policies, procedures, and standardized testing methodologies by evaluating workflow, new instrumentation, and staffing to recommend and implement process changes.
Directs and coordinates the interface between new and existing hospital information systems and laboratory instrumentation.
Establishes staffing allocations, assignments, and work schedules within laboratory disciplines (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Pathology, Accessioning, Phlebotomy, Blood Bank, and Serology).
Collaborates with the Quality Manager of Laboratory Services and/or Administrator of Laboratory Services regarding ongoing quality, compliance, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure delivery of quality, patient‑centered care and results.
Minimum Qualifications Level II (Appointment)
– Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
Level VI (Acute Care Only)
– In addition to Level II requirements, must meet one of the laboratory supervisor qualifications outlined in Title 10, Section 58‑1.4 of the New York Public Health Law; must have
Two (2) years of experience overseeing laboratory or blood bank operations, creating and establishing laboratory or blood bank programs, and reviewing and interpreting safety data in a hospital or health care setting.
Successful completion of NYC Health + Hospitals’ Supervisor Development Program within three (3) months of appointment or promotion.
Department Preferences Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State. Candidates licensed as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work—including supervising personnel—in a laboratory discipline/specialty appropriate to their license or permit. Candidates licensed as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work—including supervising personnel—in all laboratory disciplines/specialties.
