Innovative People Operations Executive: 11+ Years Optimizing Employee Experience Position Summary:

The Corporate Controller oversees the financial management and reporting functions of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and transparency in all fiscal matters. This role is responsible for managing all accounting operations, including general ledger, grants management, budgeting, audit preparation, and regulatory compliance for a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The Controller will provide strategic financial insight to leadership to support mission‑driven decisions and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and monthly closings.

Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB 958).

Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure accurate classification of revenues, expenses, assets, and liabilities.

Manage month‑end and year‑end closing processes, reconciliations, and financial analyses.

Support the CFO in preparing and presenting financial reports to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.

Grant & Fund Accounting

Manage restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring compliance with donor intent and grantor requirements.

Track and report on grant expenditures, revenue recognition, and fund balances.

Collaborate with program and development staff to prepare grant budgets, financial reports, and reimbursement requests.

Ensure compliance with federal and state grant regulations (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance).

Audit, Compliance & Controls

Lead the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors to ensure timely completion.

Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.

Oversee tax filings including IRS Form 990, state filings, and other regulatory reporting.

Ensure compliance with 501(c)(3) requirements, GAAP standards, and organizational policies.

Budgeting & Forecasting

Partner with the CFO and department heads to develop annual budgets and periodic forecasts.

Monitor performance against budget and provide variance analysis and recommendations.

Assist in multi‑year financial planning and scenario modeling.

Supervise accounting staff and foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Provide training and guidance to staff on financial policies and grant compliance.

Support cross‑department collaboration to improve financial processes and transparency.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.

Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.

Nonprofit accounting experience required; experience with 501(c)(3) organizations strongly preferred.

Expertise in grant and fund accounting, federal grant compliance (OMB Uniform Guidance), and nonprofit GAAP.

Experience with accounting software such as Sage Intacct, Blackbaud, or QuickBooks Nonprofit.

Strong understanding of nonprofit financial regulations and best practices.

Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.

Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Collaborative leadership style with a commitment to the organization’s mission and values.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.

Experience managing federal, state, and foundation grants.

Familiarity with Paycom, ADP, or other payroll systems.

Experience in a healthcare, human services, or education nonprofit settin
