A senior high‑voltage battery engineer will join a technical team focused on developing BEV components and systems for future hybrid and electric vehicles at Mercedes‑Benz. The responsibilities include identifying and assessing battery chemistries and technologies through scouting, collaboration, validation and analysis. The role also involves conducting market trend analysis and communicating findings to senior and executive leadership.
Relocation assistance (domestic or international) is not provided for this position.
Job Responsibilities
Advance the state‑of‑the‑art battery chemistry technology for electrified vehicles.
Scout and evaluate innovative battery material chemistry and technology.
Perform advanced data analysis to recommend battery research priorities.
Collaborate closely with R&D team to identify improvements in battery performance and cost.
Support additional battery technology and chemistry testing/analysis activities as needed.
Report progress and trends regularly in written and verbal forms to all technical and leadership stakeholders.
Document results of individual and team efforts for publications or patents.
Minimum Qualifications
M.S. degree or higher in chemical engineering, material science engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering with a focus on battery chemistry.
Master's +5 years of experience, Ph.D. +2 years of experience.
Working knowledge of lithium‑ion battery operation and performance including charging, discharging, safety, impedance, aging, cycle life, temperature effects, sustainability, failure modes, handling and pack assembly methods and associated equipment.
Fundamental knowledge of lithium and post‑lithium‑ion electrochemistry; capable of making test choices based on electrochemical nuances.
Experience building and/or validating cell (half, coin, single, multilayer pouch) samples.
Strong background in analytics and benchmarking.
Experience with scouting and executing multi‑partner projects (Li‑Ion field preferred).
Strong work ethic, a sense of accountability, and the ability to take ownership of projects.
Takes initiative and is able to work with little or no supervision.
Team oriented and able to work in a fast‑paced, collaborative global environment.
Proven communication skills with the ability to interact with technicians, scientists and leadership.
Drives for results; the passion to set and meet high standards of performance.
Drives for accountability; the ability to establish clear, measurable goals to deliver on.
Valid U.S. Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands‑on experience with battery performance characterization techniques (e.g., EIS), cell design optimization, and reliability testing.
2 years of experience with battery research and development desired.
Experience with Python scripting.
