Overview Northrop Grumman Advanced Weapons Business Unit is seeking a Principal / Sr Principal Engineer – Operations Research for our Advanced Programs Software, Modeling, and Simulation team in Northridge, CA. The role evaluates investment decisions and assesses new technologies and military operations. Responsibilities include simulation tool and infrastructure development, model development, scenario creation, and analysis across multiple domains.

Responsibilities

Develop and apply advanced software and systems methods to investigate complex technical problems.

Develop and use tools that support visualization of the battlespace at mission or engagement level.

Use, develop, and modify tools to support data analysis of simulation or flight test results.

Model operational environments; perform trade studies via computer simulation; recommend alternative architectures.

Develop software to model behavior of systems in real‑time and constructive simulations.

Develop, integrate, and use advanced graphical user interfaces and visualization tools.

Perform mission simulation using government or industry standard tools to determine mission effectiveness.

Perform engagement simulation using standard tools, MATLAB, Simulink and others.

Perform modeling and simulation studies that optimize mission performance across the air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains.

Perform modeling, simulation, and analysis tasks assessing system survivability, effectiveness, and overall performance in engagement/mission-level scenarios.

Develop performance models and algorithms, threat models, and command and control models for new and existing system simulation frameworks.

Solicit input from stakeholders, synthesize data, and communicate results to leadership.

Participate in Agile engineering project frameworks.

Basic Qualifications – Principal Engineer (T03)

BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Physics and 5+ years modeling, simulation, and analysis of Aerospace Systems; OR MS and 3+ years of similar experience.

Current/active U.S. Government issued DoD Secret Clearance (issued within past 5 years).

Experience as an AFSIM developer/analyst, including making and validating movers, creating observers, post‑processors, and performing large Design of Experiments (DoE) studies.

Experience creating compelling OV‑1s, data visualization, and briefing materials.

Experience executing technology development and EMD contracts with DoD customers.

Experience leading Operations Research studies, identifying Technical Performance Metrics (TPMs), and developing study plans from Statements of Work (SOWs) and Statements of Objectives (SOOs).

Basic Qualifications – Sr Principal Engineer (T04)

BS and 9+ years modeling, simulation, and analysis of Aerospace Systems; OR MS and 7+ years; OR PhD and 4+ years.

Current/active U.S. Government issued DoD Secret Clearance (issued within past 5 years).

Experience as an AFSIM developer/analyst, including making and validating movers, creating observers, post‑processors, and performing large Design of Experiments (DoE) studies.

Experience creating compelling OV‑1s, data visualization, and briefing materials.

Experience executing technology development and EMD contracts with DoD customers.

Experience leading Operations Research studies, identifying TPMs, and developing study plans from SOWs and SOOs.

Preferred Qualifications (Both Levels)

Comfortable with high‑level programming languages such as C/C++.

Strong software development principles with data throughput and distributed systems knowledge.

Experience with MATLAB, Python, VBA, or similar.

Comfortable developing across Windows/Linux operating systems.

Strong debugging skills and use of debuggers, compilers, and command‑line execution.

Ability to develop shell scripts for program execution.

Knowledge of software engineering development lifecycle processes.

Experience with version control tools (Bitbucket, GitHub, GitLab).

Experience integrating custom plug‑ins to AFSIM.

Experience with distributed simulation protocols such as DIS or HLA.

Experience assessing system survivability, effectiveness, and performance in mission‑level scenarios.

Knowledge of RF Threat Modeling, Electronic Attack techniques, guided missile design.

Knowledge of simulation frameworks: AFSIM, Suppressor, Brawler, JWS, AJEM, ESAMS, NGTS, EADSIM, TACZAAM, ITASE.

Familiarity with Agile, MBSE, and system architecture frameworks.

Effective project management, communication, and leadership skills.

Proposal development, writing, or execution experience.

Location & Benefits Office: Northridge, CA (short drive to downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood Hills, and San Fernando Valley). Compensation Primary Level Salary Range: $110,300 – $165,500. Secondary Level Salary Range: $137,400 – $206,000.
