Landfill Worker (Heavy Equipment Operator) Join to apply for the Landfill Worker (Heavy Equipment Operator) role at City of Bullhead City. This is a full-time, FLSA non‑exempt position with Carson City Public Works located in Carson City, Nevada. Under immediate supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of landfill maintenance and operations duties required for efficient and effective service to landfill customers and the City. Compensation and Benefits Employer‑Paid PERS Retirement: $26.98 - $37.77 hourly / $56,117.88 - $78,565.24 annually . Employee/Employer‑Paid PERS Retirement: $32.55 - $45.57 hourly / $67,699.84 - $94,779.62 annually . Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment necessary for landfill operations; maintain equipment in a clean and functional operating condition. Operate water truck to perform dust control and fire suppression activities as required. Operate gatehouse; utilize automated scale system; calculate and collect amount due for waste loads. Direct vehicle traffic at the landfill. Maintain landfill shop, catch fences, and buildings. Perform snow removal as required. Perform basic clean‑up of site and facilities as required. Enter and retrieve data and prepare reports using a computer; review reports for accuracy and make corrections as required; operate standard office equipment. Observe safe working practices, including maintaining work areas in a safe condition. Use standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work. Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as a member of a work team. Keep basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc. Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff; act in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience. Valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire. Must complete a pre‑employment physical examination and respiratory fit test. Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement. Physical Demands & Working Environment Mobility to work in a field setting, use of standard office equipment, stamina to sit and walk for extended periods of time; agility to navigate uneven terrain; strength to lift and carry up to 80 pounds; work at height up to 75 feet; vision to read printed materials; hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; exposure to weather conditions, fumes, dust, and hazardous chemicals. Employees must maintain an active telephone and reside within 30 minutes of Carson City. Employees must be willing to work overtime, shifts, weekends, holidays, and may be required to be on‑call. Conditions of Employment All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. During this period they are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged for any reason. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. Employees may be required to remain at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or other duties as requested in a response position. Employees must complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment. New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint‑based background investigation (cost $47.00) and a drug screen (cost $84.00). Employment is contingent upon passing the background and drug screen. Carson City participates in E‑Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security with information from each applicant’s Form I‑9 to confirm work authorization. This position is covered under the authority of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Act; all employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with FMCSA requirements.
