Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking for a 3rd Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia. Join our team of outstanding professionals – apply today!

50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States.

Work Schedule: Monday through Saturday, 10 hours a day (as needed).

Responsibilities

Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for interior communications and other purposes on marine vessels.

Essentially maintain and repair electrical systems aboard ships.

Diagnose, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.

Perform simple routine tasks under detailed instructions: replacing components, wiring circuits, repairing simple electronic equipment, and taking test readings with instruments such as digital multimeters, signal generators, semiconductor testers, curve tracers, and oscilloscopes.

Work under close supervision, receiving technical guidance from supervisors or higher-level technicians; work is frequently checked for accuracy.

Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.

Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships under guidance.

Layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic aboard Navy vessels.

Read and interpret schematics and blueprints; work from engineering sketches, charts, work orders, and detailed technical documents.

Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables; assist in diagnosing equipment to eliminate problems efficiently.

Remove and install cables overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck.

Repair and replace cables/connectors.

Apply production-process knowledge to complete complicated and non-routine tasks related to shipboard systems and equipment, respecting quality and safety procedures.

Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.

Maintain effective communication with supervisors and managers.

Plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.

Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for complete installations.

Qualifications

Must have a DoD Secret clearance.

High school diploma, GED, or industrial/trade school certificate.

Two to three years of experience operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems on Navy vessels, Coast Guard vessels, MSC or maritime vessels, and practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems.

Familiarity with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems: MC, HYDRA, IVN, IVCN, SATCC, SIWCS.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential to work on US naval vessels.

Willingness to work overtime and weekends upon managerial request.

Ability to travel outside the Suffolk, Virginia area if required.

Prior experience with fiber optic cables and multi‑pin connectors.

Possess or provide trade‑specific hand tools.

Experience working in a team and effective communication skills.

Understanding and ability to satisfy NSI 009‑73 requirements regarding inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment.

Experience with cable installations, banding, terminal and connection boxes, cableways, hangers, and associated components.

Experience with MCT, MCP, and stuffing tube opening, packing, closing, and testing.

Knowledge of bonding and grounding of electrical equipment.

Experience with NSI 009‑25 air testing of penetrations.

Electrical troubleshooting and testing using multimeters and megohmmeters.

Experience assisting with installation and repair of electrical distribution systems and cabling.

Experience with cable removal and installation, including proper methods for opening and securing cable penetrations.

Ability to work under instruction removing, installing, and modifying electrical cable and cableways aboard naval vessels.

Familiarity with reading electrical drawings and schematics.

Familiarity with safe use of multimeters and megger.

Familiarity with NAVSEA Standard items.

Preferred Qualifications

Current NAVSEA Multi‑Pin Connector Certifications (NSI 009‑73) – highly preferred.

Current NAVSEA Fiber Optic Certification (NSI 009‑123) – preferred.

NVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications – preferred.

Graduated from or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program – preferred.

Current or active DoD Secret clearance preferred.

OSHA 10 Maritime Certification – plus.

Microsoft Office knowledge – plus.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (≥30 lbs).

Work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.

Perform duties that may involve high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.

May ride ships at sea for extended periods.

May need to wear a respirator.

50% travel required within and outside the continental United States.
