About the Position: This is senior level semi-skilled manual and mechanical work repairing, servicing and maintaining a variety of light, medium, and heavy diesel motorized vehicles, and related equipment. The incumbent assists higher level mechanics by performing routine and less complex service and repair assignments. On-the-job training is characteristic at this level, whereby the incumbent may gain experience that leads to higher level positions within the mechanic occupational field. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Garage Supervisor and is performed in accordance with established Departmental rules, policies, and procedures.
About the Agency: The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW& T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County‑maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area – all of which are maintained by staff of the Department.
DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County‑maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.
Performs the full range of preventative maintenance, lubrication and general servicing of light, medium and heavy diesel motorized vehicles and equipment.
Assist in a wide range of repairs and inspections to ensure fleet reliability and safety.
Assist with dismount, balancing, repairing, and mounting tires, wheels and rims of all sizes—both in the shop and in the field.
Maintain proficiency using the FA Suites fleet management system.
Accurately enter labor hours, parts issued, and service details into digital work order forms.
Assists mechanics by performing less complex mechanical repairs to equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, manuals and established shop procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess at least an eighth (8th) grade education.
Two (2) years of experience in the equipment repair and service field on a variety of light, medium or heavy motorized equipment, vehicles or fire and rescue apparatus.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance, including tires and preventive service tasks.
Working knowledge of shop safety procedures and mechanical systems.
Proficiency with computer systems; prior experience using FA Suites or similar fleet management software is a plus.
Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete assignments independently.
Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Airbrake Endorsement.
Strong communication skills and a team‑oriented mindset.

Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
Successfully pass pre‑employment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non‑standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
