Job Summary:
The Forklift Mechanic will be responsible for the preventative maintenance and emergency repair of all forklifts. In addition, the Forklift Technician will assist other Maintenance Mechanics with the repairs of other equipment, such as scissor lifts, boom lifts, and more.
Key Responsibilities
Perform routine, emergency, and preventative maintenance of forklifts.
Repair and maintain various types of forklift trucks, including electric, gas‑powered, and propane‑powered.
Test forklift trucks to ensure repairs are completed correctly.
Schedule and perform routine maintenance for forklift trucks; ensure batteries for electric forklift trucks are fully charged.
Interpret manufacturer technical manuals to perform necessary maintenance and repairs.
Troubleshoot forklift problems, including brake, electrical, and hydraulic systems, and detect imperfections, potential problems, safety issues, and/or malfunctions.
Diagnose and repair mast and attachment components.
Maintain good working knowledge of brake systems and tire/wheel changes.
Perform work on LP, gas, and diesel systems.
Replace broken or defective parts from stock or order replacement parts for major repairs.
Reassemble forklifts and make necessary adjustments for effective and safe operation.
Perform safety inspections of forklifts before release back to the work floor.
Clean equipment and other areas as required.
Ensure work area and methods meet safety requirements.
Maintain an organized and neat work area.
Complete legible service documents and logs for preventative maintenance tasks.
Learn new technical information and techniques to stay current with changing technology.
Follow OSHA regulations regarding forklift operations and other equipment.
Observe proper operating procedures and safety practices.
Other duties as assigned by Whirlwind Steel Buildings.
Requirements Job Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two or more years of experience in a related field, including maintenance of lift trucks such as Hyster, Kalmar, and Yale with lift ratings up to 16,000 lbs. and 60,000 lbs.
Manufacturing, automotive, military, or recent trade school graduates with applied skills.
Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and night shift if necessary.
Team‑oriented with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Capable of functioning with little supervision.
Reliable, responsible, and dependable in fulfilling obligations.
Good communication skills.
Complete test and maintenance reports.
Work within OSHA regulations.
Follow company rules and procedures safely.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
Work performed in a shop environment.
Physical effort equal to frequent moving of up to 50 lbs of materials.
Regularly required to sit or stand, bend, and reach.
Safety glasses required; earplugs recommended and required in some areas.
Ability to stand up to 10 hours a day (with a lunch break) and up to 6 days a week.
Ability to work in a non‑air‑conditioned environment.
Steel‑toe boots required in Manufacturing Facility.
Night Shift Schedule
Monday through Friday: 5 pm – 3 am.
Weekends as needed.
10‑hour shifts, but not limited to this duration.
