The Penn State Altoona Athletic Department has an immediate need for a full-time
Athletic Trainer.
The Athletic Trainer provides athletic training services to the NCAA Division III program in accordance with Pennsylvania Practice Act, established by the state board of medicine with the goal of optimizing athletic performance, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and student‑athlete wellness. This position will report directly to the Athletic Trainer Supervisor. Penn State Altoona currently has approximately 300 student athletes across 18 varsity teams and is expanding. Penn State Altoona is a Division III school competing in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with team physicians, prevent, diagnose, and treat emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities as defined by NATA.
Determine the treatment/rehabilitation needed for athletic injuries/illness and the athletes' readiness to participate including pre‑participation and post‑injury/illness return.
Provide athletic training services for athletic events including games, practices, and strength and conditioning sessions.
Research current methods of treatment and oversee adherence for required certifications and staff continuing education.
Serve as an educational resource for matters related to Sports Medicine and Athletic Training for personnel internal to and affiliated with the university.
Perform all aspects of health care administration including maintaining medical records, scheduling health care appointments, and ensuring open lines of collaboration and communication with health care professionals and athletic staff.
Recognize and monitor mental health, nutrition, and other health issues student athletes may be experiencing and refer to appropriate professional for intervention if appropriate.
Assist in the education and supervision of Graduate Student Athletic Trainers.
Oversee and coordinate student athlete entrance and exit physicals.
Contribute to the development of an environment for student‑athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and inclusive.
Indirect supervisor for other full‑time employees.
May serve as direct supervisor for part‑time, student, and/or temporary workers, volunteers, or a full‑time employee.
Minimum Education, Work Experience & Required Certifications If filled as Athletic Trainer – Advanced Professional, this position requires: Master’s Degree, 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
If filled as Athletic Trainer – Senior Professional, this position requires: Master’s Degree, 6+ years of relevant experience.
Required Certifications: Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification – American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other accredited organization; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification – American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other accredited organization; Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) – National Athletic Trainers Association, Board of Certification; Licensed Athletic Trainer – Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine.
