This position is located at one of the various Indian Health Service Hospitals or Clinics under the Navajo Area Office. The primary purpose of this position is to function as an Optometrist performing a full range of professional Optometry duties including preventive and therapeutic medical care to individuals of all ages. Examines, diagnoses, treats diseases and disorders, chronic eye conditions (i.e. cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, degenerative corneal and retinal diseases, etc).
Responsibilities include:
Delivering high quality primary eye & vision care services; examining for & prescribing corrective lenses, ordering diagnostic imaging & laboratory studies;
Preparing referrals for diagnosis, treatment & management of systemic & ocular conditions revealed through optometric examination.
Providing patient & family education regarding ocular health issues.
Performing mandated examinations such as diabetic retinopathy & glaucoma screenings.
Performing administrative components of patient care management, including timely completion of progress notes, consults & encounters for all patients.

Requirements include:
U.S. Citizenship
Selective Service Registration (for males born after 12/31/1959)
Possession of a Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited program
Current, full, unrestricted license to practice in a U.S. state or territory
Passing score on the NBEO examinations
Meet minimum experience or residency requirements for GS-12 level
Other conditions such as background checks, immunizations, and clinical privileges
Additional information: Applicants should submit transcripts, and foreign education must include a Foreign Credentialing Certificate. Benefits include federal leave, possible incentives, and loan repayment programs. Promotion potential to GS-12 exists based on performance and management discretion.
