In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Leader III - Teen Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the success of teen-focused programs and engagement initiatives at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center. This role provides direct service, administrative coordination, and mentorship in support of meaningful recreational, educational, and social experiences for middle and high school youth. The Teen Coordinator helps create a welcoming environment that promotes leadership, belonging, and positive youth development.
The Opportunity
Youth Engagement & Program Coordination
(60% / 18 hours per week) The Teen Coordinator will lead the planning, organization, and implementation of teen programs such as drop-in activities, enrichment clubs, leadership councils, and special events. They will supervise daily activities, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment while providing direct mentorship in recreational settings. This role also includes coordinating and facilitating community engagement events and teen nights that promote connection and positive youth development. The Teen Coordinator is expected to manage behavior using proactive, strengths-based strategies and foster strong, supportive relationships with youth.
Administrative Support & Communication
(25% / 7.5 hours per week) Maintain program records, attendance data, supply inventory, and reports to ensure accurate documentation and efficient program operations. Support outreach and recruitment efforts for teen programs by distributing flyers, utilizing social media platforms, and building connections with local schools. Assist with scheduling, budget tracking, and the purchasing of supplies to keep programs well-organized and resourced. Maintain regular communication with the Recreation Coordinator and other staff to align on goals,

The Teen Coordinator is expected to attend staff meetings, trainings, and citywide youth services events to stay informed and contribute to departmental goals. They will assist in developing and maintaining community partnerships with schools, youth service agencies, and teen-focused organizations to strengthen program impact and outreach. Additionally, the Teen Coordinator will complete other duties as assigned to support and enhance teen programming.
What You Should Bring
We're looking for a passionate, motivated, and organized leader who thrives on empowering teens and creating safe, inclusive spaces. You should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, coworkers, and community partners. Familiarity with recreation planning, program facilitation, behavior management, and youth development is essential.
You must be available to work a consistent weekday schedule (including afternoons and evenings) with required weekend availability to support teen events.
Recreation Leader III Key Performance objectives: • Deliver responsive, professional, and inclusive service to all participants • Plan and execute structured programs for teens that are safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate • Ensure compliance with all safety guidelines and behavioral expectations • Maintain accurate records using Microsoft Office and RecTrac software • Actively contribute to staff development and teamwork

The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities, and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations. Minimum & Additional Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to operate powered automatic scrubbers, buffers, and sweepers as required; ability to work safely without hazard to self and/or others; and sufficient physical strength to withstand the strain of working long hours in performing cleaning work.
