JOB DESCRIPTION for Solid Waste Technician (Full Time). Status: Non-exempt; Safety Sensitive. Hourly rate starting at $17.04. Summary
The Solid Waste Technician performs routine manual labor which does not require a high degree of skill; may also drive trucks and light tractors while in training status and related work as apparent or assigned. This position requires reporting to multiple locations as needed to support various operational needs across the organization.
Essential Functions
- Performs related manual labor as required.
- Performs general landscaping duties such as mowing grass, pruning shrubs, raking grass, and removing trash from SWDA property.
- May drive pick-ups on light hauls.
- May drive or operate small tractors, mowers, or trucks/vehicles that do not require CDL, often off-road.
- Performs general daily maintenance on equipment, including greasing and fueling heavy equipment.
- Details trucks and equipment.
Job Requirements
Required Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
- Basic skills in the operation, maintenance and safe use of trucks and light tractors; basic knowledge of operating assigned equipment; general knowledge of traffic rules and regulations; knowledge of safety rules (taught on the job); ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to communicate in a courteous manner.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License. (Commercial Driver’s License required for promotion.)
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical, drug screening and background check.
- Willing to work overtime and weekends in emergencies or when required.
- Willing to comply with dress standards: clean, neat attire with appropriate foot and hand gear.
- Willing to work evening shifts; Willing to pick up garbage; Ability to follow directions; Willing to assist mechanics as needed.
Physical Requirements
- See well enough to read, write and safely operate garbage truck; hear well enough to respond to verbal communications; speak well enough to answer questions politely.
- Wear PPE to minimize exposure to hazards.
- Body mobility to perform inspections and operate vehicle; ability to bend, move, stand, and lift.
- Use of hands and fingers to perform manual work; dexterity to operate levers and gears.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Frequently standing and walking; occasional kneeling, bending or crouching; climbing onto equipment; balancing when mounting/dismounting.
- Exposure to adverse environmental conditions (extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, noise, etc.).
