STREET & SOLID WASTE WORKER II
Pay Range: $43,737.00 - $61,232.00
Pay Grade: 53
FLSA Status: Non- Exempt

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of light or medium motorized equipment in the Street/Solid Waste Department; performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this position operate street sweepers, chipper trucks, leaf trucks, bucket trucks, mowing tractors and other light and medium weight motorized equipment related to street maintenance and solid waste collection. The work is performed under the direction of the Streets and Solid Waste/Fleet Supervisor and Assistant Streets and Solid Waste Director.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operates sweeper truck, following a set route to maintain city streets free of litter and debris;
  • Operates leaf collection truck and leaf vacuum machine removing loose leaves from roads and curbs;
  • Operates chipper truck and chipper machine, removing limbs and branches from roads, curbs, and right of ways;
  • Operates bucket truck in the trimming and removal of limbs/brush in City right of ways;
  • Operates tractors and mowers to cut vegetation along roadways;
  • Maintains the upkeep of refuse truck, by cleaning/washing the vehicle routinely;
  • Maintains accurate collection documents;
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining sidewalks and curbs including some repairs and patching potholes;
  • Repairs or replaces signs;
  • Assists with solid waste collection and ensures it’s being done timely;
  • Supervises personnel assigned to truck;
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Job Related Physical Activity Requirements

This position involves heavy physical labor, including exerting over 100 pounds of force occasionally. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and engaging in repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate trucks and machinery. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of hazards and safety practices associated with the work; ability to operate light and medium duty vehicles and equipment including mowing tractors, chippers, etc.; knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing vehicular operation and safe driving practices; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Additional Requirement

Must possess or be able to obtain a minimum Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License within six months.
