Overview Working under the day to day supervision of the pharmacists and Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for the proper handling of medications, including receiving, distribution, expiration date management, Pyxis inventory, storage, repackaging, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. The job requires excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Ordering/Receiving: assist with receiving orders from wholesalers, scan deliveries, inventory and label to ensure all items are received; confirm that each med is scannable (involve pharmacist when appropriate); maintain stock levels by signaling when items are low; repackages medications from bulk to unit-dose when necessary.
Compounding: perform dosing calculations and unit conversions; prepare clean room and sterile areas; follow clean room policies; prepare low and medium risk sterile and non-sterile compounds; comply with universal precautions and aseptic technique.
Inventory Management: check expiration dates; credits/debits in Meditech; resolve missing medication issues; perform monthly floor inspections; ensure proper labeling; dispose of medications and hazardous materials; identify/return expired meds eligible for credit; assist in semi-annual inventory activities.
Fills Medication Orders: accurately select proper drug, dosage form and strength; retrieve medications from ADC fill list; organize filled meds for checking; refill trays and kits as needed (e.g., Code Trays, STEMI kits, anaphylaxis kits); fill OR machines.
Delivers Medication: perform routine rounds to patient care areas; deliver meds to ADCs, medication rooms, or nursing staff as requested; update machines with current date; outdate meds in ADC when delivering; return meds from floors when needed.
ADC (Automated Dispensing Cabinet) Support: load/unload, fill accurately using scanner, ensure neat packing, troubleshoot minor equipment issues, reboot equipment as needed.
Communication: provide exceptional customer service; answer phones and triage calls requiring pharmacist attention; coordinate with nursing and other staff outside the pharmacy.
Professionalism: maintain high professionalism, build relationships, dress neatly, keep a clean work area, represent the Department of Pharmacy, comply with HIPAA, support training of new staff, manage time effectively.
Maintains Logs: accurately document logs (e.g., refrigerators, hood cleaning, eye wash) and report omissions or errors.
Handle Controlled Substances: maintain thorough records, ensure accuracy and proper handoffs; promptly report concerns or discrepancies to the pharmacist or supervisor.
Required Knowledge & Skills (Examples: ability to work independently and take initiative; good judgment and problem solving; strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills; confidentiality.)
