Working under the day-to-day supervision of pharmacists and Pharmacy Leadership, the technician is responsible for the proper handling of medications. This includes, but is not limited to: receiving, distribution, management of expiration dates, inventory management in Pyxis, storage, repackaging, compounding, filling orders, delivering, and stocking. Excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a fast-paced environment are essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works under the supervision of:

Pharmacy Leadership

Pharmacists

Ordering/Receiving:

Assists with receiving orders from wholesalers

Scans deliveries and inventories items with appropriate stickers

Confirms each medication is scannable, involving a pharmacist when necessary

Maintains proper stock levels by informing in writing when items are low

Repackages medications from bulk to unit-dose when needed

Compounding:

Performs calculations for dosing, conversions, admixture volumes

Prepares clean room and sterile products, following policies and procedures

Prepares low and medium risk sterile and non-sterile compounds

Uses aseptic technique and universal precautions

Inventory Management:

Checks expiration dates and manages medication inventory

Resolves medication issues and conducts monthly inspections

Ensures proper labeling and disposal of medications and hazardous substances

Assists with semi-annual inventory activities

Fills Medication Orders:

Selects proper drugs and doses accurately

Organizes medications for checking and delivery

Refills trays and kits as needed

Delivers Medication:

Performs timely rounds to patient care areas

Delivers medications to appropriate locations and updates ADC with current information

Returns medications from floors when necessary

Fills Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC):

Understands loading/unloading processes

Fills ADC accurately using scanners and troubleshoots minor issues

Communication and Professionalism:

Provides excellent customer service and communicates effectively

Maintains professionalism, neat appearance, and organized workspace

Supports training of new staff and complies with HIPAA

Maintains Logs and Handles Controlled Substances:

Documents daily logs accurately

Reports discrepancies and handles controlled substances with care and accuracy

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Effective written and oral communication

Basic math skills for compounding

Ability to work in a team and problem solve

High level of customer service

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE:

Maintains licensure as CPhT and State registration

Completes educational modules, including Steward University

Performs required tests such as gloved fingertip and media fill

Day and evening shifts with every other weekend required.
