Job Description
As an Advanced Hardware Engineer, you will be part of the PMC Engineering group, designing and sustaining portable gas detectors used in critical safety applications. You will contribute to all phases of product development — from concept and circuit design to compliance testing, manufacturability, and production support — while collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams in Mechanical, Firmware, and Systems Engineering. Your technical expertise will directly impact Honeywell’s ability to deliver reliable, compliant, and innovative products that meet the needs of our global customers.
PMC is a $1.5bn Strategic Business Unit within Honeywell’s Industrial Automation Group, specializing in gas measurement, control, detection, field instrumentation, terminal gauging, and custody transfer solutions. Our innovations enhance efficiency, safety, and reliability for customers in oil and gas, renewable energy, utilities, and semiconductors.
You will report directly to our Director of Engineering and you’ll work out of our Lincolnshire, IL location on a Hybrid work schedule.
Key Responsibilities As part of PMC Engineering group, you will be one among the team designing & sustaining portable gas detectors
Locate and work in a multidisciplinary team performing electronics system development, schematic design, circuit simulation, detailed design, working with regulatory agencies, verification testing, and interfacing with cross functional teams while meeting requirements
Coordinate team efforts of interdisciplinary engineers (Mechanical, Firmware, ECAD, Evaluation) for design of product and potential risk identification
Perform design analysis results (stress, tolerance, error budgeting, timing, power, etc.) and provide technical expertise for design trade offs
Design the electrical architecture of SIL2 IEC 61508 product considering usability, functionality, regulatory and compliance aspects
Work with operations and supply chain to ensure manufacturability of the product and participate in production test equipment development and design transfer activities
Additional responsibilities include proof of concept firmware development, data acquisition software applications, technical report generation, documentation & progress reporting
Maintain high quality documentation of the entire design as required by quality organization
Perform hands-on work in the lab, as required

Compensation The annual base salary range for this position is $107K-$134K. This salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.
US PERSON REQUIREMENT Due to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, candidate must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or have asylum or refugee status in the U.S.
Qualifications YOU MUST HAVE Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
2–5 years of hands-on experience with microprocessor-based systems, including analog & digital circuit design, power supply design, and sensor interfacing
Experience supporting at least two stages of a full product development lifecycle, including design, validation, compliance testing, and launch, with familiarity in EMI troubleshooting and regulatory standards (e.g., IEC 60601)
Proficiency with data acquisition and analysis tools (e.g., LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, or Excel) and knowledge of communication protocols such as USB, SPI, and I2C
WE VALUE Good understanding of optical spectroscopy and laser-spectroscopy–based gas detection
Knowledge of six sigma principles in product design & development
Working experience with analog sensor signal conditioning circuits with microcontroller/processor integration
IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 standard awareness for product design (e.g., PFD / HFT)
ATEX / flame-proof design experience
Intrinsic Safety (IS) protection techniques for safe operation of electrical equipment in hazardous environments
Exposure to additional communication protocols such as DDR, SGMII, HDMI, and wireless interfaces (Wi-Fi, BLE)
Hands-on experience with error budgeting and statistical data analysis using tools such as Minitab
