Helping Hands provides HOPE and CARE through personal, trauma-informed programs to individuals experiencing homelessness. Our programs are Trauma-Informed, Data-Driven, and Person-Centered. We build strong collaborative partnerships with local programs and foster connections between participants and our community partners.
Position Summary The Safety Specialist ensures the safety and security of residents, staff, and visitors to the facility while fostering a supportive, person-centered and trauma-informed environment. This role involves monitoring the premises, responding to safety incidents, and assisting with emergency preparedness and daily safety operations. Full-time, schedule varies, 24/7/365 environment.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor entrances, exits, shared spaces and camera views to ensure the safety of all individuals on site.
De-escalate conflicts using nonviolent, professional communication and trauma-informed techniques.
Conduct hourly walkthroughs and safety checks of indoor and outdoor spaces as per Basic Post Orders.
Assist in implementing Emergency Action Plans, including drills and evacuations.
Report incidents clearly and accurately, escalating to supervisors and management as needed.
Support residents during safety-related incidents, ensuring dignity and respect.
Provide crisis response support in collaboration with program staff and emergency services.
Identify and report safety hazards or maintenance concerns.
Engage positively with residents, offering a reassuring presence without intimidation.
Maintain accurate documentation and reporting.
Essential Skills And Qualifications
1–2 years’ experience in safety/security, preferably in a human/social services environment.
Current DPSST Certification Required
Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Suite
Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, making sound decisions in emergencies.
Excellent communication and observational skills.
A professional and compassionate disposition along with excellent customer service skills.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts as needed.
Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain within 60 days of hire).
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of trauma-informed, person-centered and harm-reduction approaches
Bilingual or bicultural skills are a plus
Understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness, chemical dependency, domestic violence, and sexual assault
Lived experience with homelessness, DV, and/or addiction
Physical/Mental Requirements The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee, with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Hearing and vision adequate for interaction with participants, staff, and the general public.
Work both indoors and outdoors (including exposure to inclement weather conditions), accompanied by moderate noise levels and exposure to scents.
Occasionally operates a computer and/or other office productivity equipment, such as copy machine, printer, and phone.
Frequently required to move about within the facility and remain on feet for extended periods: stand/walk up to 5-10 miles per day, lift up to 50 pounds.
