Overview
Mechanical Engineer (Water & Heavy Infrastructure) – AECOM AECOM is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our Water business line, specializing in heavy mechanical engineering. In this role, you will design, develop, and oversee the fabrication of large-scale mechanical systems that are critical to water infrastructure. The position involves working on waterworks gates (vertical lift gates, radial gates, sluice gates, Tainter gates, sector gates), hoists and actuators, cranes, and large pumps and pumping stations. Occasional travel for site visits and meetings with clients is expected. Responsibilities
Design and develop heavy mechanical systems for water infrastructure projects. Create 3D models using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and other mechanical design software for use in detailed design drawings. Engineer and oversee fabrication of waterworks gates, hoists, actuators and associated control systems. Conduct engineering calculations and analysis to ensure structural integrity and mechanical performance according to industry standards and specifications. Review and approve engineering drawings and vendor submittals. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including Civil, Structural, and Electrical Engineers. Provide technical guidance during manufacturing, installation, and commissioning phases. Inspect and troubleshoot mechanical systems in the field to ensure quality and compliance. Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned engineering tasks. Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements. Prepare technical reports, specifications, and documentation. Support proposal development by providing technical input and cost estimates. Interface directly with clients as needed. May travel a few times a year for site visits and meetings with clients. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree from an ABET accredited Mechanical Engineering program and 6+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. Ability to work independently with guidance. Preferred Qualifications 6+ years of mechanical engineering design related to water, heavy infrastructure, or relevant product/heavy industrial machinery engineering. Experience with locks, dams and other large water works structures. Professional Engineering licensure in the United States or the ability to obtain licensure within 2 years. Mechanical design experience of gates, hoisting mechanisms, actuators or large-scale mechanical systems. Experience with cranes and other lifting devices. Experience with large pumps and pumping systems. Strong background in heavy steel fabrication, welding, construction and large-scale mechanical engineering projects. Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and other 3D design tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Proficiency with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and analysis methods.
