At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence! The Plutonium Capability Transuranic Waste Management group, Nuclear Process Infrastructure-6 (NPI-6) is looking for a highly motivated individual to serve as an Acceptable Knowledge Scientist to join our team. NPI-6 ensures safe, efficient, and compliant waste management generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). We also provide ample opportunities to learn new skillsets and maintain a supportive environment when challenges arise. How we do our work is just as important as what we do. Our team members comply with a variety of nuclear management related requirements; work independently on challenging concurrent projects requiring close cooperation, adaptability, initiative, and willingness to provide support wherever needed to meet LANL's National Security Mission. The person filling this position will be required to work non-normal business hours. Weekend Day Shift Team (Friday - Monday 6:00am - 4:30pm)
as required to meet facility objectives. Shift Differential Pay:
This position is eligible for differential pay. Responsibilities
Adhere to scientific policies, programs, procedures and practices. Participate in technical analyses and reviews of characterization data collected from a broad range of waste characterization techniques to develop, evaluate and/or support solutions to waste management or materials management problems. Utilize scientific methods; participate in the investigation of the origins of waste materials, researching historical records and information. Develop new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical issues such as chemical compatibility research or container monitoring and evaluations technology. Contribute to research of cross-disciplinary, or highly and/or narrowly novel scientific and technological solutions in support of R&D initiatives. What You Need
Minimum Requirements Communication:
Ability to follow detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of reports. Teamwork:
Understands success in a team environment and the need for collaborative behavior. Leadership:
Ability to mentor junior staff, peers, and students. Skills/Expertise:
Possesses demonstrated experience in emerging technical specialty. Communication:
Ability to communicate safety, security, and quality assurance practices for the work assignment, including calibration concepts and protocols. Education/Experience:
Position requires a bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. DOE Order 426.2:
Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, 2 years of job-related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience. Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated thorough knowledge and experience in one or more technical research discipline. Demonstrated thorough knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical research and development projects, including the formulation, and testing of hypothesis, investigation of alternate solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems. Thorough knowledge and proven ability in formulating and presenting results to technical audiences and readerships. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more technical R&D discipline. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical R&D projects including the testing of hypothesis, investigation of alternative solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems. Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with multiple variables. Work Environment, Location, and Commitment
