Overview

Research Technologist 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)

– The Nuclear Materials Science group (MST-16) is seeking a research technologist to advance the scientific output of a recently completed electron microscopy laboratory dedicated to plutonium and actinide research. The MST-16 Group supports a variety of nuclear weapons programs, including Plutonium Modernization, Pit Surveillance, Science Campaigns, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), and other programs. The group contributes to fundamental plutonium science, providing characterization of new and aged pit construction materials, and developing technologies for advanced actinide materials analysis. Our work uses multidisciplinary actinide materials science in areas such as phase stability, aging, electronic structure, corrosion, and surface science. Work locations include the Plutonium Facility (PF-4), the Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building (RLUOB), the Target Fabrication Facility (TFF), and other facilities at LANL and across the country. This position is ideal for pursuing a non-academic career track with the opportunity to work in an area of materials science that is available at only a few places in the world. In this role, you will manage the electron microscopy instruments and resources to aid actinide research. Responsibilities include acting as the primary maintenance contact for our SEM/FIB and Cs-corrected (S)TEM, coordinating activities with staff across the lab, training users, managing documents, running experiments, and collecting data. If you are interested in working on exciting science with a strong impact on national security, without the burdens of an academic lab, read on.
