Overview Headquartered in Los Angeles, GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized AI robotics startup serving the manufacturing industry. We empower shop floor workers with smart robots that assist with tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks, specifically in automated surface finishing. Our GMR-AI software integrates with state-of-the-art industrial robots, sensors, and tools to create application-specific turnkey solutions for customers through a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model. The Robotics Engineer: Motion Planning role is on-site in Carson, CA to support internal teams and develop algorithms and architecture for production software by working with physical robots, sensors, and tools. The role focuses on planning, learning, perception, and control to solve practical problems, with travel to client locations as needed.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement algorithms, systems, and architecture for high-DOF robotic systems in constrained environments.

Develop computer vision algorithms using multi-modal sensing for 3D geometry reconstruction, segmentation, and inspection for manufacturing applications.

Develop high-performance, production-ready software packages and systems with GPU programming and other hardware acceleration methods.

Stay up to date with new research in robotics and artificial intelligence; test and evaluate state-of-the-art planning, learning, perception, and control techniques.

Maintain current knowledge of the product and related hardware to offer technical assistance to internal and external teams at facilities and customer locations.

Identify and resolve software issues through systematic debugging to ensure optimal system functionality.

Allocate up to 50% of time to assist the application team for POCs, FATs and deployments, complementing core software development with application-related tasks.

Travel to client locations for on-site system-level debugging, ensuring restoration and maintenance of optimal system functionality.

Other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, or related engineering discipline.

5+ years of experience developing, implementing, and testing algorithms for planning, learning, perception, and control.

Software development for complex function-based software that interacts with sensor inputs, control loops, and redundancy.

Proficiency in C++ and ROS2; experience deploying software systems in production environments.

Experience implementing motion planning algorithms for dexterous manipulators in constrained environments; strong understanding of motion planning concepts.

Experience with optimization-based or sampling-based motion planning algorithms; architecture and large-scale system design.

Ability to communicate and collaborate across multiple teams; willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Must meet export control requirements in the United States and maintain ongoing work authorization from time of hire through employment.

Preferred Qualifications

MS/PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, or similar engineering discipline.

7+ years of experience in planning/learning/perception/control.

Experience in GPU programming and other hardware acceleration methods.

Experience delivering complete software products that meet functional and safety-critical requirements.

Experience developing software for complex function-based systems that interact with sensor inputs, control loops, and redundancy.

Compensation for this position includes a base salary range of $130,000 - $190,000 USD plus equity. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, unlimited PTO, 401(k) plan with employer match, and other perks. Location: Carson, CA.
