Senior Professional, Roadway Engineer at WSP in the U.S. – Herndon, VA
WSP is initiating a search for a Senior Professional, Roadway Engineer to join our Mid-Atlantic District Transportation Team. The successful candidate will have experience in civil/roadway design and plans production for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. This role functions as a task manager and/or design engineer on projects for VDOT and other state agencies, Northern Virginia counties and cities, and other local agency/municipal clients.
Responsibilities
Determine well-defined methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits. Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update infrastructure layout plans with coordination from owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality for end-users and transportation systems, incorporating future-ready solutions with civil engineering design standards. Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, including layout, reference points, elevations, grades, cost and quantity calculations, and ensuring compliance with specifications, permits, and regulatory/technical analyses. Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for interpretation or presentation of findings. Maintain quality control standards for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting. Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects and provide guidance to entry-level engineers. Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to address design and/or construction issues or opportunities. Assist in data analysis from field investigations and contribute to action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation. Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs) and comply with regulatory data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring, and retention requirements. Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally and confidently. Remain current in the latest civil engineering techniques and practices; work with engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities at Federal, State, regional, and local levels. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline. 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and prior civil design experience. Engineer in Training Certification. Proficient knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, processes, and permitting considerations. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects. Working knowledge of reducing or eliminating hazardous substances/greenhouse gas implications. Working knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans and specifications, and compare to applicable regulations. Project management experience with small to mid-size projects, including tracking hours and expenses. Ability to conduct inspections and investigations of facilities or structures in line with applicable regulations and policies. Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency with design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS) and related tools. Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities to apply technical knowledge to data and testing results. Ability to guide others in the field to ensure safe and efficient task completion. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP safety and policies. Ability to accommodate project schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs. Preferred Qualifications
