This position is in the Engineering and Technical Services unit of Facilities Services and reports to the Manager of Utilities Engineering. Position Summary

Serves as civil engineering campus expert for all capital projects, including renovations, expansions and new facilities; collects, develops, and analyzes technical data to determine project requirements and prepares information regarding specifications, materials, equipment, estimated costs, and completion times.

Responsibilities

Functions as Facilities Services project engineer (civil/structural) for campus-wide water, sewer and storm distribution systems, for a major construction project, including new construction or major alterations.

Serves as engineering liaison to coordinate communications between chief architects, chief engineers, engineering staff and Facilities Services Utilities Operations Plumbing Shop.

Coordinates all or most segments of a project, from inception to completion.

Functions as design engineer (civil/structural) for projects of limited scope undertaken by Campus staff, such as small buildings and structures, minor alterations to large buildings, utility, drainage and road systems.

In working with Utility Operations Plumbing Shop, prepare a list of projects for funding requests related to DM and other sources of funding.

Technical consultant and support on water, sewer and storm drain metering on existing meters and to-be-installed meters.

Provides professional engineering information and advice to committees of current or prospective occupants in determining building needs and priorities for projects of limited scope. Serve as Project Manager for annual water survey for EBMUD.

Reviews engineering design development and construction documents to ensure compliance with the specified programs and policies of the Campus.

Functions as Facilities Services engineer, concentrating in a particular aspect of the physical planning and construction program or the physical plant operation and maintenance program.

Keeps the Campus-wide water, sewer and storm distribution maps updated.

Provides analysis to improve the design, operation and maintenance features of civil/structural and/or utility systems in a physical plant.

Serve as technical reference for trades groups requiring field support.

Provide input for Campus Design Standards and perform plan reviews, including CP projects connecting to campus water, sewer and storm drain systems and follow-up on recommendations.

Recommend and/or prepare water, storm and sewer Capacity Studies to Projects as required and review results then provide recommendations to PM.

Actively participate in project meetings as requested by PM with consultants and contractors.

Serve as Facilities Services representative to projects and to EBMUD and EH&S.

Resolve problems or conflicts in areas of civil and structural engineering expertise, including recommending a range of solutions to disputed issues.

Required Qualifications

Experience with engineering flow/hydraulic principles and software modeling systems (e.g. EPANET, KYPipe, SewerGEMS); ability to develop and/or update existing models for water, sewer and storm.

10 years of experience in utility distribution operations & maintenance and/or design.

Expert written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including expert-level political acumen and negotiation skills.

Expert knowledge of design and construction, contract administration and California Building Codes, including expert understanding of industry practices or highly specialized disciplines.

Expert project management skills to effectively manage highly complex projects or highly specialized components of projects with a significant impact on campus.

Expert skill in building, maintaining and nurturing strong professional relationships to achieve program implementation goals.

Expert knowledge in civil/structural engineering.

Expert skill in promoting, advancing and implementing programs within area of expertise.

Advanced knowledge of and/or ability to quickly learn the campus, including its infrastructure, rules, regulations, policies and strategic plans.

Expert analytical, organizational, project management and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited school and/or equivalent experience/training.

State of California Professional Engineering license; current and clear Professional Engineering (PE) License.

Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website. The budgeted annual salary range for this position is $134,200.00 - $186,000.00.

This is a full-time, Career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.

This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
