Save Job

Interconnection Studies Engineer (Generation / Storage / Hybrid) – Saber Power Services, a portfolio company of Greenbelt Capital Partners, is a fully integrated electrical power system services firm providing end-to-end solutions across utility, renewables and battery storage, industrial, petrochemical, and other markets. Based in Houston, Texas, Saber Power offers deep subject matter expertise and uses an engineering-led approach to designing, installing, testing, and maintaining medium and high-voltage electrical infrastructure. Saber serves clients locally, nationally, and abroad.

Position Summary

The Interconnection Studies Engineer is responsible for performing and reviewing transmission and interconnection studies (screening, feasibility, system impact, and facility studies) for generation, energy storage, and hybrid resources seeking to interconnect to the ERCOT grid. The engineer ensures that study results submitted by developers comply with ERCOT, NERC, and industry standards, and helps guide interconnecting entities through the interconnection process.

Responsibilities

Conduct screening studies, power flow studies, stability studies (transient, voltage, small‑signal), short circuit, and other studies relevant to interconnection.

Review interconnection study reports submitted by project developers / consultants for technical accuracy and compliance with ERCOT/NERC criteria.

Develop study scopes for Full Interconnection Studies (FIS) or impact studies.

Interface with interconnecting entities, consultants, and Transmission Service Providers (TSPs) to resolve study assumptions, boundary conditions, model data, etc.

Review and approve modeling data (steady state, dynamic, reactive capability curves, protection settings).

Ensure consistency of modeling across ERCOT’s network models (e.g. NMMS).

Assess impacts of new interconnections on system reliability (contingency analysis, voltage support, thermal limits).

Present study results, assumptions, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.

Participate in protocol / planning guides updates, modeling standards, and working groups.

Support commissioning, energization, and testing phases (review test plans, witness tests, validate results).

Develop tools, scripts, or automated workflows to improve study efficiency.

Provide technical mentorship or guidance to more junior engineers.

Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

Several years (2-5+) experience in power systems studies, especially interconnection / grid integration of generation / storage.

Strong knowledge of power system analysis: load flow, short circuit, dynamic stability, voltage stability, reactive power, harmonic, etc.

Experience with power system modeling tools (e.g. PSS®E, Power World, PSCAD, PSLF, PowerFactory).

Ability to read, interpret, and develop single-line diagrams, protection schemes, and relay logic.

Familiarity with NERC, ERCOT, IEEE, and industry modeling standards.

Good written and verbal communication skills; able to liaise with multiple parties (developers, utilities, regulators).

Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, problem-solving mindset.

Proficiency in scripting or programming (Python, MATLAB, VBA, etc.) is a plus.

Experience with database tools or managing large models is desirable.

Preferred / Desirable Skills

Understanding of inverter-based resource modeling, control systems (inverter control, voltage regulation, frequency response).

Knowledge of ERCOT protocols, planning guides, interconnection procedures.

Experience reviewing or preparing interconnection agreements, compliance checklists.

Familiarity with NERC MOD standards (MOD‑025, MOD‑026, MOD‑027) and model validation processes (MQT).

Experience in commissioning or field testing of generation / storage facilities.

Experience with version control, workflow automation, tool development (e.g. Git, scripting).
