A rapidly growing energy technology company specializing in advanced battery storage solutions is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Interconnection / Power Systems Electrical Engineer. This role focuses on supporting the development of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, ranging from 2MW to multi-Gigawatt capacities, including those serving high-demand computing infrastructure.
As the Interconnection lead, you will interface with customers and utility representatives to facilitate the interconnection process. You’ll serve as the in-house subject matter expert, conducting power system studies, developing models, and managing external consultants when needed. The ideal candidate is experienced in utility-scale interconnection and substation design, and comfortable collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct steady-state, dynamic stability, and short-circuit analyses using tools such as PSSE/E and ETAP
Develop PSS/E and PSCAD models for utility-scale BESS projects supporting large computing loads
Provide technical guidance on interconnection requirements, risk identification, and mitigation strategies
Prepare and submit interconnection applications to utilities and Independent System Operators (ISOs) such as ERCOT, SPP, MISO
Review third-party applications and models for completeness and accuracy; lead technical negotiations as needed
Summarize study results for clients and internal teams
Design high-voltage (115kV, 230kV, 345kV) substation one-line diagrams using AutoCAD
Create HV and MV layouts for hybrid energy projects (BESS, wind, solar, gas)
Use transmission mapping tools to identify Points of Interconnection (POIs) and assess available transfer capacity
Review site layouts using GIS tools to optimize substation placement and transmission line routing
Stay informed on regulatory updates and industry trends to apply best practices
Ensure compliance with relevant safety codes and standards (IEEE, NERC, FERC)
Manage multiple projects and coordinate with clients and project managers to meet deliverables
Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
4+ years of experience in interconnection, transmission planning, or power systems modeling for large-scale BESS, renewable energy, or data center projects (3+ years with Master’s degree)
Proficiency in PSS/E modeling and analysis
Experience reviewing third-party studies and reports
Solid understanding of substation design principles
Experience collaborating with clients, utilities, ISOs, and project teams
Basic proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical drafting
Strong grasp of energy market dynamics and grid codes, especially in deregulated markets
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineering (PE) license in Texas
Experience using ETAP for various electrical studies
Familiarity with grounding analysis tools such as WinIGS or CDEGS
Experience with data center infrastructure
