Protection and Controls Engineer (Remote Position)

About The Role The Protection and Control Engineer is responsible for performing detailed electrical studies and developing protective relay settings for power system equipment in substations. This role focuses on ensuring the reliability, safety, and compliance of the power system by conducting various electrical analyses, such as such as load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, coordination studies, lightning protection, and grounding design as well as programming and testing protective relays. The engineer will collaborate with project teams, clients, and regulatory bodies to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. Areas of focus include substations for Wind, Solar, Battery Energy Storage, and stand-alone electrical projects from conception through construction and commissioning. This position is hybrid/remote based out of one of the following offices: Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Tampa, FL/New Orleans, LA/Charlotte, NC. Key Responsibilities The position requires the candidate to work within a multi-disciplinary team for the conducting of electrical system studies & reports, protective relay settings, and support design of P&C/Substation projects. Coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules, budget, quality requirements to ensure successful project completion. Accountable to provide design activities in accordance with applicable codes and standards (IEEE, NFPA, NEC, NESC, etc.), including UUE’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control. Collection of data in connection with studies, reports, relay settings, and designs. Write detailed technical reports summarizing electrical study findings, recommendations, and compliance with industry standards. Checking of manufacturers' prints for acceptability and making calculations as required. Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and client specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability. Prepare progress reports, compliance documentation and record-keeping of substation and P&C technical documents and drawings. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Key Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college. Three (3) to seven (7) years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry or utility consulting experience is required. Working knowledge of basic electrical engineering principles, substation design methods, power system protection philosophies, electric system modeling, and relay settings are required. Requires coordination with other groups to ensure the projects are successful. Collaborate with a team of engineering professionals. Results driven with strong planning, organizational skills, and a drive to learn. Must be able and willing to self-learn new software applications. Prepare input data for computerized solutions to engineering problems. Must be competent with the following Software: Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam (preferred), AutoCAD Electrical, ARCGIS (preferred), Power system analysis tools (e.g. ETAP), Relay setting software (e.g. AcSELerator) and Protective relay testing & commissioning software (preferred). Key Nice-To-Haves Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred. Key Info Hybrid work setup is preferred. General office working conditions. Work outside regular schedule may be required. Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report. Travel for work may also be required for relevant site visits (up to 10%).
