Emergency Medical Technician (Temporary)

Overview
The City of Coronado is accepting applications for the Emergency Medical Technician (Temporary) position with the Coronado Fire Department. The Department’s mission is to maintain a highly trained, professional organization providing excellent service to the community, region, state, and each other through Duty, Honor, Respect, and Family.
The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that may occur within the immediate future. Under supervision, the EMT responds to emergency medical calls and provides basic life support services to ill or injured persons in accordance with the policies established by the Department of Emergency Medical Services of San Diego County. The EMT operates and maintains ambulances, support vehicles, equipment, stations, and communication systems; attends classes and training; and performs other duties as required.
Responsibilities
Responds to emergency medical services (EMS) calls, including all types of accidents and non-emergency calls.
Performs EMS skills as defined in the EMT scope of practice; provides a basic life support assessment of medical problems and injuries; renders emergency medical care and treatment in accordance with Department and San Diego County EMS policies and protocols.
Support and assist other Fire personnel as directed on medical calls.
Operates ambulances safely and transports patients in accordance with Department policies and San Diego County EMS policies and protocols.
Prepares written reports and records (e.g., controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, EMS reports) and maintains medical information confidentially.
Administers CPR, emergency bandaging and splinting, and other medical procedures as directed by the Base Station Hospital.
Assists in the maintenance and replenishment of medical equipment, medication, and supplies.
Participates in drills and other Department training activities.
Studies and stays up to date on City geography, Department rules, regulations, procedures, and other training materials.
Regularly operates the ambulance/rescue vehicle and related emergency medical equipment, radio/telephone equipment, and personal protective equipment.
Performs other related duties as required.

Experience:
Six months of full-time field experience as an Emergency Medical Technician is highly desirable, but not required.
Education/Training:
Must be at least 18 years of age and have education equivalent to completion of high school.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record (ambulance driver’s endorsement not required).
Possession of a valid EMT certification with the State of California is required at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
Possession of a valid EMT accreditation with the County of San Diego EMS Office is required at time of appointment and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
Possession of a valid CPR certification.
Selection Process Candidate Selection Process:
Applications must be received by the Human Resources Division. This recruitment is open until filled. The first application review deadline will be May 10. The examination process may include an oral interview and skill assessment. A conditional offer may be issued pending successful completion of a background check and medical examination.
Additional Information All candidates who successfully obtain a passing score in each phase of the exam process will be placed on an eligibility list for a period of at least six (6) months.
