Product Application Engineer Location: Protective Films and Coatings, Aurora IL
Reports to: VP of New Product Development, Protective Films and Coatings, Aurora IL
About the Position The Technical Coatings Engineer at Protective Films and Coatings is a key technical resource responsible for delivering innovative temporary surface protection solutions. This role involves conducting customer application and process simulations in our lab or on site with customers. This will include a wide range of environmental and performance testing conditions. The engineer will collaborate closely with technical staff, new product development, sales, marketing and customers across diverse applications, products and materials. Additionally, this role supports the development and commercialization of coatings for adjacent markets.
Key Responsibilities
Lead testing and qualification of temporary surface protection and functional coating products for a variety of customer-specific markets, applications and processes
Support initiatives focused on sustainability, quality and process improvement
Provide expert consultation on protective surface products, heat seal technologies and functional coatings to meet client needs
Serve as a subject matter expert and thought leader within the Protective Films and Coatings team
Manage projects aimed at achieving best in class product performance and continuous improvement
Create samples and prototypes for customer evaluation
Analyze data and trends to develop reports and presentations for clients
Utilize internal and external testing labs to validate solutions using customer specifications, ASTM and TAPPI protocols
Collaborate regularly with product development, sales, marketing, operations, quality and customers
Design and execute testing and experimentation programs
Conduct design of experiments to identify performance trends and evaluate quality issues related to adhesives and films
Support on-site manufacturing trials and coordinate with engineering and operations as needed
Partner with Account Managers during customer visits and calls to provide technical expertise, product demonstrations, and application insights
Translate customer requirements into technical solutions, ensuring alignment with product capabilities and limitations
Participate in business reviews and customer meetings to present product performance data, new product capabilities, and application development opportunities
Provide training on solutions and industry trends to internal and external stakeholders
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and lab equipment software
Travel up to 20 percent domestically to support customer applications and sales efforts
Experience and Abilities
Strong attention to detail and quality inspection with a tactical mindset for developing innovative surface protection solutions across various markets
High level of critical thinking and technical problem solving
Regular exposure to manufacturing and operations environments
Ability to influence and collaborate across cross functional teams
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally
Familiarity with test software packages and Microsoft Office applications
Education Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biology, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or relevant industry experience is helpful but not required.
Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of Pregis’ total compensation package. The base pay range for this role is estimated to be $82,000 to $99,000 for this salaried exempt role.
