The research, which is part of the broader debate on the study of the processes of formation of an endonormative grammar of Brazilian Portuguese (PB), aims to analyse one of the aspects that most distinguishes the American variety of the Portuguese language from the European one (PE): the placement of clitic personal pronouns. The research aims to verify, also from a comparative perspective between European and American norms, whether the texts of 18th-century Brazilian academic cultural groups – the first instance and the first documents in which it is possible to trace the early signs of an identity, including linguistic identity, distinct from the European one and which, although still undefined and uncertain, can be called Brazilian – the phenomena governing the current position of unstressed personal pronouns in what is called, in contrast to the standard PB norm, the urban cultured variety (also called neo-standard PB) are productive.
