Tenure Track Position - Coatings Technology. Job No: 551370. Location: Central California, San Luis Obispo. Position type: Instructional Faculty – Tenured/Tenure-Track. Department: Chemistry and Biochemistry, Bailey College of Science and Mathematics, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Appointment begins August 17, 2026. This is a full-time, academic year, tenure-track position. Responsibilities
The teaching assignment may include courses in coatings and formulations, macromolecular chemistry, polymer synthesis, and general chemistry. The successful applicant will be committed to quality undergraduate teaching, continued scholarly activity, and service to the University. Candidates with an interest in and ability to pursue scholarly projects with undergraduate students are preferred. Additional responsibilities include pursuing a systematic program of research and scholarship, curricular improvement, and participation in service activities such as committee service, student advising, and building industry relationships. The candidate will consider using creative lecture and laboratory teaching approaches that include current and emerging technologies to enhance student learning and will engage in peer-reviewed research, professional consulting, conference presentations, and grant development that leads to publication. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; higher ranks will be considered. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Anticipated hiring ranges: Assistant Professor: $97,788 – $107,628 Associate Professor: $112,500 – $118,524 Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. in chemistry or biochemistry, coatings and polymeric materials, macromolecular science, or a related field is required prior to the start date of the appointment. The ability to mentor master's degree students in coatings technology. Experience working with or in the coatings industry. Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, and the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language. Evidence of (or potential for) high-quality teaching and research with students. Evidence of (or potential for) scholarly productivity. Evidence of (or potential for) promoting the well-being and advancement of students, colleagues, and the department. Ability to work with a diverse population fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment. Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching lecture and laboratory courses at the university level is desired but not required. Expertise in an area compatible with or broadening the department's research activities. Experience supervising student research. Postdoctoral experience. Special Conditions
