The Head Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Special Education Schools. This position is responsible for performing routine cleaning, maintenance, and light repair tasks to ensure that the school facility supports the unique needs of students receiving special education services. The Head Custodian works primarily during daylight hours and plays a leading role within the custodial team by acting as lead resource for other custodial staff. Leadership:

Provide training and guidance to custodial staff on cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and equipment use. Provide feedback to ensure high standards of cleanliness and maintenance.

Cleaning and Sanitization:

Oversee daily cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and thoroughly. Perform advanced cleaning or assist custodial staff during peak periods or special needs. Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines, particularly in sanitizing high-touch surfaces.

Facility Maintenance:

Perform or delegate routine maintenance tasks, including light repairs, changing light bulbs, and minor plumbing issues. Inspect the facility regularly to identify maintenance or repair needs and ensure timely resolution. Communicate major repair requirements to the Facilities Manager or Principal.

Safety and Security:

Ensure that all areas of the school are free of hazards and meet safety standards. Oversee opening and closing of the school, including locking/unlocking doors and activating security systems as required. Respond to emergencies such as spills, leaks, or other facility-related incidents promptly and effectively.

Support for School Operations:

Coordinate and assist with setup for school events, meetings, and special programs. Manage the inventory of custodial supplies and equipment, placing orders as needed. Work collaboratively with school staff to address specific needs and requests.

Collaboration and Communication:

Maintain open communication with administrators, teachers, and other staff to ensure a responsive and supportive environment. Foster a professional and respectful work environment among custodial team members.

Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience:

At least three years of custodial or maintenance experience, particularly in an educational or healthcare setting. Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment. Basic understanding of maintenance tools and techniques. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Additional Requirements:

Current Act 114, Act 34, Act 151 and NSOR Clearances required prior to an offer (Must be dated within 1 year of hire date). School Personnel Health Record (Form H511.340) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date. Working Conditions: The Head Custodian will work primarily indoors but may occasionally need to perform outdoor tasks, such as snow removal or grounds maintenance. The role involves exposure to cleaning chemicals and requires adherence to safety protocols. This position primarily works in the day but flexibility to work evenings or weekends may be required. This position may involve standing, walking, and active engagement throughout the day.
