QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold at least a high school diploma or GED. They should have knowledge of the cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work, and the ability to use them safely, economically, and efficiently. The ability to observe and report needs for maintenance and supplies is essential. Candidates must be able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. They should get along well with students, officials, and the general public, and work effectively with others. Strong leadership skills and the ability to train staff and manage tasks efficiently are also required.

DESCRIPTION

A head custodian is responsible for the oversight of custodial staff and tasks for the assigned location. Also, proper performance of light, medium, and heavy cleaning and custodial work during an assigned shift. The employee performs janitorial and minor maintenance duties requiring some skill in the use of cleaning materials and equipment performing preventative maintenance on HVAC units, and in making minor repairs. The work also involves moving furniture and loading/unloading trucks as needed.

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed) Oversees and coordinates the work of custodial staff at assigned location, providing guidance, training, and support to maintain a clean and safe environment. Demonstrates strong leadership skills by assigning tasks, setting priorities, and ensuring efficient workflow among custodial team members. Takes responsibility for the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the facility, including classrooms, offices, common areas, and restrooms. Conducts regular inspections to identify maintenance needs, coordinates repairs, and ensures compliance with cleanliness standards and safety protocols. Manages and monitors custodial supplies and equipment inventory, ensuring that stock levels are maintained and orders are placed in a timely manner. Collaborates with procurement and vendors to secure cost-effective and quality cleaning supplies and equipment. Enforces safety protocols and compliance with health and safety regulations to create a secure environment for staff, students, and visitors. Conducts regular training sessions for custodial staff on safety procedures, proper chemical usage, and the correct operation of cleaning equipment. Fosters open communication with school or facility administrators, addressing any concerns related to custodial services and providing regular updates on maintenance activities. Collaborates with other departments and external contractors to coordinate special cleaning projects, events, or facility modifications. Performs related duties as required or assigned

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services and School Principal/Administration.

WORK CONDITIONS

Work requires regular lifting, stooping, bending, and sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity to perform all required tasks. Ability to work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and climate conditions. Ability to lift, move, transport supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with manual or mechanical assistance and utilizing appropriate safety gear as per OSHA guidelines.
