Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Open Continuous Announcement This announcement will remain open until December 15th, 2025. Initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be October 20th, 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates every 5 days.

Work Schedule Part‑time, 20 hours per week. Schedule to be coordinated with your supervisor.

Paid Time Off 50‑55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME).

Retirement Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Licensure 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory.

Contract No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.

Clinical Duties

Treat complications arising from diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and smoking.

Treat patients who need hemodialysis because of kidney failure secondary to diabetes mellitus or hypertension, by creating an access in their arm for hemodialysis.

Treat varicose veins in the legs.

Consult with other physicians and refer patients to other specialists if required.

Discuss all the non‑operative, medical versus surgical treatment options, as well risks and benefits of surgery with the patient.

Schedule follow‑up to monitor patient's prior procedures and aneurysm size as part of well‑established vascular society guidelines and advise them on suitable after‑care measures and medication they might require.

Administrative Duties

Document all medical information in an electronic medical record.

Education Duties

Instructing and educating Vascular Surgery and General Surgery Residents.

Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

Selectives Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Subject to background/security investigation.

Must pass pre‑employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

Citizenship: United States Citizenship or non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited U.S. medical school.

License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs or other residencies with minimum five years of verified practice in the United States.

Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Board Certified or Board Eligible Vascular Surgeon.

Physical Requirements This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to wear protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must be able to perform CPR per ACLS/BLS protocol.
