Head School Bus Mechanic – Indianapolis Public Schools Join Indianapolis Public Schools as the Head School Bus Mechanic. Report to the Director of Transportation. Plan, direct, and supervise all maintenance and repair of the district’s fleet of school buses and other vehicles. Use expertise in diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic and air brake systems, electrical systems, and preventative maintenance programs. Lead, mentor, and evaluate a team of mechanics while ensuring safety compliance and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

– Oversee daily operations of the bus garage, schedule tasks, assign responsibilities, provide technical guidance, mentor junior mechanics, evaluate performance, foster a safe and productive work environment, collaborate with the Director on staffing and operational improvements.

Vehicle Maintenance & Repair

– Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on school buses and district vehicles; perform engine overhauls, transmission replacements, brake system repairs, suspension work, electrical troubleshooting; conduct inspections to meet DOT requirements; develop and implement a preventive maintenance program; respond to road calls and perform emergency repairs in the field; maintain shop tools and equipment.

Administrative & Record‑Keeping

– Maintain accurate records of all repairs, maintenance, inspections, parts inventory, warranty information; assist in budget preparation; utilize diagnostic software; prepare reports as required by the Director of Transportation or regulatory agencies.

Safety & Compliance

– Execute work in accordance with safety procedures and regulations; monitor compliance with environmental regulations related to hazardous material storage and disposal; stay up‑to‑date on new technologies, repair techniques, and safety standards.

Collaboration & Communication

– Communicate effectively with bus drivers, transportation staff, and school administration regarding vehicle status, repair timelines, and safety concerns; coordinate with outside vendors for specialized repairs or parts; assist in developing bus specifications for new vehicle purchases.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Completion of a certified diesel mechanic program or equivalent vocational training preferred.

ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in school bus or heavy‑duty truck repair highly desirable.

Minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience as a school bus or heavy‑duty truck mechanic, with significant experience diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical issues.

Previous supervisory or lead mechanic experience preferred.

Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements required; air‑brake endorsement required; state inspection certificate may be required.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing.

Ability to lift and move up to 50 lb routinely, up to 100 lb with assistance.

Capacity to work in various weather conditions and environments, including noisy and dirty conditions.

May be required to be “on call” for emergency breakdowns.
