Job Title: Fractional CFO

Department: MSO- Accounting and Payroll

Reports to: Director of MSO- Accounting and Payroll

Summary The Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides executive-level financial leadership and oversight to participating YMCAs through the MSO shared service model. This role ensures consistent financial strategies, reporting, and compliance across member associations while offering cost‑effective access to CFO expertise. The Fractional CFO will work in close collaboration with YMCA CEOs, Boards, and finance staff, supported by the MSO finance team, to provide guidance to strengthen financial health, optimize cash flow, and advance the mission of YMCAs statewide.

Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership:

Provide scalable CFO‑level services across participating YMCAs in alignment with the MSO’s fractional service model.

Direct annual cash flow forecasting with mid‑year refreshes and scenario analysis.

Provide guidance and support for annual budget development, offer insights through quarterly variance reviews, and coach CEOs to strengthen financial decision‑making.

Review of treasury management, including monthly cash management, banking overview, and providing guidance for investment strategies.

Deliver quarterly board‑ready financial narratives and presentation materials tailored to each YMCA’s needs.

Provide ad‑hoc strategic financial guidance, ensuring a 72‑business hour response time for CFO‑level inquiries.

Ensure compliance with accounting standards, financial regulations, and YMCA of the USA reporting requirements.

Contribute to long‑term financial strategies to improve sustainability and growth of participating YMCAs.

Review and strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, and risk management policies by conducting internal assessments, identifying vulnerabilities (e.g., cash handling, grant compliance, IT security) as needed, and give guidance on corrective action plans for any weaknesses identified in past audits.

Provide technical accounting expertise on complex issues such as leases, revenue recognition, restricted funds, capital campaigns, and grant compliance, ensuring proper documentation and alignment with accounting standards while advising auditors on unique transactions.

Team & Collaboration

Partner with MSO accounting and payroll staff to deliver integrated financial management services.

Mentor and guide YMCA financial staff, promoting consistent standards and professional development.

Collaborate with YMCA CEOs, boards, and department leaders to ensure effective use of financial resources.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA or CPA preferred).

7–10 years of progressive financial leadership, preferably in nonprofit or multi‑entity environments.

Proven expertise in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and audits.

Experience with financial systems (Daxko, QuickBooks Online, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.

Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities; able to distill complex data into actionable insights.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to partner across multiple organizations.

Essential Functions

The Fractional CFO provides high‑level financial strategy and oversight without the full‑time payroll cost of an in‑house CFO. Through this shared model, the CFO ensures consistency, transparency, and strategic insight across YMCAs while empowering local leaders with the financial tools and reporting necessary to make sound decisions. The role requires balancing day‑to‑day financial oversight with long‑term strategic planning across multiple independent associations.
