Person County Government is seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Assistant Chief Financial Officer to join our Finance Department. As the Assistant CFO, you’ll play a pivotal role in assisting in the management of the county’s financial activities — from overseeing daily accounting functions to participating in projects that impact the annual Adopted Budget and Audit Reports. You'll ensure fiscal compliance, maintain strong internal controls, and contribute to long-term financial planning. This position is ideal for someone with strong analytical skills and a passion for public service. This role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and works closely with the County Manager to help drive sound financial strategy across the organization.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.

This is an exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.

Essential Functions

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.

Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.

Coordinates the annual budget and audit processes including oversight of budget development, tracking, and financial reporting.

Assists with the preparation and compilation of the county's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and ensures compliance with new governmental accounting and reporting standards.

Monitors departmental budgets to ensure compliance and analyzes department budget transfer requests and prepares budget amendments for commissioner meetings.

Identifies and resolves first-level problems for accounting software users, including answering questions, providing advice, and troubleshooting.

Reviews accounting and treasury policies and procedures to ensure that adequate internal controls are developed and maintained.

Prepares and processes certain monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries.

Assists in training county department staff on financial matters and provides support for special projects.

Serves as a technical expert in interpreting and implementing new governmental accounting and reporting standards.

Leads or participates in a variety of special projects.

In the absence of the CFO, the Assistant CFO will step into meetings and represent the department in financial discussions and decision-making processes.

Performs related work as assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or Public Administration, Economics, or a related discipline.

Six (6) years of public accounting, finance, budgeting, auditing, or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
