Role Overview Our Boston office is seeking a dynamic and experienced Business Development Manager to drive local marketing and business development initiatives while supporting firmwide strategic goals. This is a unique opportunity to make a visible impact in a collaborative, high-performing environment.
Responsibilities
Develop, lead, and implement BD plans aligned with Boston office priorities. Customize BD strategies to ensure alignment with the Boston BD Plan and responsiveness to evolving market demands.
Partner with Boston attorneys to identify growth opportunities and client targets.
Monitor competitor activity, client developments, and market trends in Boston.
Produce regular reports on BD outcomes, pipeline activity, and strategic insights for Boston office leadership.
Support research and analysis for client targeting and industry positioning, leveraging advanced research tools (e.g., LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Lex Machina, Docket Navigator).
Serve as a proactive partner to Boston attorneys and IP professionals, anticipating their business development needs and providing tailored support for pitch opportunities and strategic BD and marketing initiatives.
Gather and act on attorney feedback to continuously improve BD support and resources for the Boston office.
Identify and promote attorney thought leadership opportunities coming out of the Boston office, including speaking engagements, publications, and industry awards, to enhance individual and office visibility.
Collaborate with PR teams to raise the profile of Boston attorneys and the firm’s practices.
Engage with local organizations (e.g., Boston Chamber of Commerce, industry associations) to expand visibility and build high-value connections.
Coordinate with the Events team on planning and execution of Boston client-facing programs, networking events, sponsorship activations, and office initiatives.
Evaluate event ROI, follow-up opportunities, and feedback for continuous improvement.
Support the CDMR department with overseeing RFP responses, proposal development, and presentation materials tailored to firmwide client needs.
Serve as the firm’s primary contact for the Alumni Committee and related efforts. Maintain and expand alumni contact lists using LinkedIn Sales Navigator and other tools.
Direct outreach to alumni and leverage their networks for referral and business development opportunities across offices.
Track alumni engagement and support relationship-building initiatives firmwide.
Provide lead support in Finnegan’s practice group support model for attorneys, coordinating with leadership on the business and client development team as needed.
Collaborate with CDMR colleagues across offices on firmwide initiatives and participate in regular department meetings.
Mentor and oversee BD specialists and coordinators, fostering professional growth and cross-functional collaboration.
Oversee inventory of marketing materials and promotional items for Boston office use.
Manage budgets for marketing and BD activities across the Boston office.
Assume all other tasks as assigned by CMO, director, and managers.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Marketing, Business Administration, or Political Science.
Minimum of seven years of experience in legal marketing or business development, ideally in an Intellectual Property or Corporate law service environment.
Proven success in strategic planning, event management, project leadership, and cross-functional collaboration at both local and firmwide levels.
Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to synthesize data and succinctly convey facts and strategic implications.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience with proposal writing, marketing collateral development, and team mentoring.
Proficiency in CRM systems, Microsoft Office Suite (including Copilot), virtual event platforms, video‑conferencing technologies, and exposure or experience with SharePoint a plus.
Knowledge of and/or demonstrated aptitude for analytical research, with experience in a wide range of research tools, including advanced Internet searching, Sales Navigator, Lex Machina, Docket Navigator, or other related legal databases.
Analytical mindset with ability to synthesize data and deliver actionable insights.
Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
Collaborative team leader with a proactive, client‑focused approach.
Ability and willingness to work overtime when necessary.
Ability to deal courteously and efficiently with attorneys, clients, administrative and support staff, and outside vendors and professional peers.
Willingness to be a team player on all marketing‑related projects.
The base annual pay range for this role is between $140,000 - $155,000. The base pay to be offered will vary and depend on skills and qualifications, experience, location and will also take into account internal equity. A full range of medical, financial and/or other benefits dependent on the position will also be offered.
