Associate Staff Scientist - Ultrafast Structural Dynamics

Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an Associate Staff Scientist to join the Material Science group within the Science, Research and Development (SRD) Division at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The primary research focus of this group concerns ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics in two- and three-dimensional condensed matter systems using Megaelectronvolt electron scattering experiments with the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (MeV-UED) instrument, and using hard x‑ray diffraction experiments, and soft x‑ray spectroscopy experiments with the LCLS free electron laser. The successful candidate will help support user science and beamline operations at the LCLS instruments, including the LCLS MeV-UED instrument, the XPP instrument and the XCS instrument. They will develop new science capabilities and related instrumentation for the facility with a focus on ultrafast structural dynamics in condensed matter. They will develop a successful self‑led scientific research project/portfolio within LCLS. Specific Responsibilities Include

Develop the ultrafast science program at the LCLS MeV UED facility Support MeV UED, XPP and XCS user operations Develop new techniques and operation procedures to improve and support ultrafast program at LCLS Support expansion of the capabilities of LCLS Collaborate with other SRD scientists and other divisions within LCLS To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, applied physics, or related fields and minimum 0‑2 years of experience and Ph.D. level expertise in ultrafast science, structure dynamics or electron or X‑ray diffraction. Effective communication and writing skills to prepare and present technical and scientific documentation. Demonstrated record of scientific productivity through publications. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population. Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and be able to collaborate in a team environment.
