Base pay range

$18.00/hr - $22.00/hr

Job Summary

The Hardware Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining hardware insertion equipment in a precision sheet metal manufacturing environment. This role ensures the proper installation of hardware components—such as studs, standoffs, nuts, and other fasteners—into fabricated sheet metal parts according to engineering drawings and specifications. The Hardware Operator plays a critical role in maintaining product quality and supporting efficient production flow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Equipment Operation – Set up and operate hardware insertion machines, such as PEM or Haeger presses.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and part drawings to determine correct hardware specifications and placement.
  • Install various types of hardware including self-clinching fasteners, studs, nuts, standoffs, and other components.
  • Verify hardware size, type, and placement prior to production runs.
  • Monitor machine performance, make minor adjustments, and perform basic preventive maintenance.
  • Quality Assurance – Conduct first-piece and in-process inspections to ensure all hardware is correctly installed and meets quality specifications.
  • Visually inspect parts for proper seating, alignment, and function of installed hardware.
  • Document inspection results and report non-conformances to the supervisor or quality team.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy and workmanship.
  • Safety & Housekeeping – Adhere to all safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free from hazards.
  • Report any safety issues, defective tools, or equipment malfunctions immediately.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and improvement efforts.
  • Production Support – Work closely with team members and supervisors to meet daily production goals.
  • Support production flow by assisting other fabrication operators or departments when needed.
  • Communicate clearly regarding job progress, material needs, or process issues.
  • Ensure all tasks are completed in a timely, accurate, and safe manner.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 1 year of hardware insertion experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience in precision sheet metal fabrication is a plus.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
  • Familiarity with various types of hardware and correct insertion techniques.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform machine setup and adjustments.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical requirements: manufacturing floor environment with exposure to noise, machinery, and metal components; standing for long periods, repetitive hand and arm movements, lifting up to 50 lbs, occasional bending, kneeling, and reaching.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in both office and production floor environments, with regular exposure to fabrication equipment, mechanical systems, and facility infrastructure.
  • Frequent collaboration with production, engineering, quality, and management teams is routine.

Schedule

Hours: 2:15 PM – 10:45 PM, Monday – Friday (Some flexibility may be required based on production needs).

Compensation

Hourly Range: $18-22 per hour.
