Overview
BL HUMAN RESOURCES (BL-HR-IUBLA) manages day‑to‑day HR operations and drives strategic people initiatives for 26 departments, units and schools across the IU Bloomington campus. As strategic business partners, we provide subject matter leadership and consulting designed to increase workplace productivity and develop improved processes for attracting, developing and retaining people with the required skills and aptitude to meet current and future business needs.
Responsibilities
Department‑Specific Responsibilities
- Consults with all management levels, offering guidance on HR and university policies and practices where appropriate.
- Analyzes departmental HR trends and metrics to deliver strategic and impactful solutions for senior leadership.
- Resolves complex employee relations issues in partnership with the Dean’s Office, including FMLA, ADA/RA, Performance Improvement Plans and Corrective Action, ensuring investigations are effective, thorough and objective.
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of legal requirements for employee management to mitigate legal risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Provides day‑to‑day performance management support to line managers, including coaching, counseling, career development and disciplinary actions. Leads departmental initiatives for Performance at IU programming.
- Collaborates with management and employees to enhance workplace relationships, morale, productivity and retention, and leads departmental initiatives for MyVoice at IU engagement programming.
- Reviews compensation with support of COE and HR Leadership to offer recommendations based on internal equity, external wage data and university‑wide benchmarks, serving as the departmental expert on compensation policies, practices and programs.
- Directly supervises an HR Generalist, guiding work assignments and setting performance expectations.
General Responsibilities
- Utilizes and applies in‑depth HR body of knowledge and skills to provide strategic guidance for academic and/or staff HR related matters such as salary administration, hiring, training, policy interpretation, promotion and tenure, unit restructures and workforce planning.
- Resolves and provides solutions to the most complex employee relations issues with continued partnership, counsel and support from COEs.
- Develops, implements and drives recruiting strategies to meet current and anticipated staffing needs.
- Coaches and partners with leaders to create actionable plans for improving leadership effectiveness and continuous improvement for employee engagement.
- Provides strategic academic and/or staff HR consulting and problem‑solving solutions on complex issues to leaders and managers to ensure alignment and consistency across the University.
- Provides advice to leadership for development in support of a strong human capital strategy.
- Collaborates with HR COEs to roll out and support University wide initiatives, ensure client needs are understood and met, and deliver change management interventions.
- Provides HR support for academic personnel processes, including administration for academic leaves, policy review and consultation, visa‑processing coordination and facilitation of promotion and tenure procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required (Human Resources preferred). Master’s degree preferred.
- 7+ years progressively responsible experience in multiple HR disciplines or related.
- SHRM‑SCP/SPHR preferred within 1 year from hire date.
- Valid driver’s license with ability to be insured by Indiana University.
- Excellent collaboration and team‑building skills.
- Effective conflict and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated project management skills and ability to coach and deliver constructive feedback.
- Knowledge of key HR principles and practices including talent acquisition, employee relations, compensation practices and compliance with federal and state laws.
