Position Summary

This is a skilled Industrial Wastewater Operator position that assists in overseeing, operating and maintaining a complex industrial wastewater pretreatment system which contains a variety of wastewater treatment processes and auxiliary equipment for the processing and handling of industrial wastewater and generated industrial byproducts. Preventive Maintenance (PM) and all necessary tasks to maintain the facility are part of this position duties and responsibilities. Reports to plant engineer or designated maintenance supervisor.

Essential Functions

• Operate and monitor all wastewater pretreatment plant equipment and make necessary adjustments based on findings.
• Collect periodic samples and perform and record the results of various laboratory tests to assess and monitor the condition of the system and determine optimal chemical and biological treatment.
• Assists in maintaining the efficiency of plant and laboratory operations, including maintenance of equipment pumps, filters, and machinery, testing, quality control and record keeping procedures.
• Read and record meter and gauge readings.
• Assist in maintaining plant records, including operations logs, daily diaries, computer data entry and chemical inventories.
• In accordance with the Wastewater Discharge Permit, collect and submit all required effluent sampled to a certified laboratory.
• Ensure timely reporting to local authorities and facility management if an upset or exceedance occurs.
• Perform ground maintenance and housekeeping duties as needed.
• Interact and coordinate with external contractors including wastewater related services.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of:
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work
  • Chemical safety practices
  • General math and basic algebra skills
  • Practices and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of industrial wastewater pretreatment systems
  • Sampling methods and the physical and chemical tests used in treatment plant control
  • Servicing requirements of moving machinery
  • Hazards and safety practices involved in working around high voltage equipment and moving machinery
  • Process quality control requirements and remedial measures in dealing with process malfunctions and emergencies
• Ability to:
  • Operate and maintain pumps, motors, and equipment
  • Read meters, gauges, and other recording instruments
  • Maintain operating records
  • Operate a computer-based interface for controlling mechanical processes
  • Use Microsoft Excel (including data entry, basic math formulas, and formatting)
  • Make mathematical computations
  • Read and comprehend written materials
  • Learn technical and specialized processes pertinent to wastewater pretreatment plant work, including required laboratory analysis
  • Use common hand tools
  • Work independently and understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Work harmoniously with others
• Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Regularly climb stairs and ladders
  • Able to work in wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat.
• Experience:
  • One to three years working with municipal and/or industrial wastewater - not required but wastewater experience is desired
• Education /Training:
  • High School Diploma or GED
• License or Certificate:
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License
