Summary
This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. The role performs both janitorial and custodial services, including textile distribution, sanitizing and disinfecting, waste removal, cleaning blinds, washing windows, dusting, polishing furniture, discharge cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing, and polishing floors and applying floor finishes.
Duties
The primary responsibilities include:
Perform floor maintenance and wall washing; clean doors, doorframes, baseboards, corners, edges, and stairwells using sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, vacuuming, and extracting carpets and runners. Periodically use pressure washers and heavy industrial or battery-operated equipment, maintaining the equipment and changing attachments as needed.
Empty trash and wastebaskets, replace liners, and transport general refuse, regulated medical waste, and recycling to central collection areas.
Clean restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms to meet acceptable standards, including disinfecting lavatories, showers, bathtubs, urinals, toilet bowls, mirrors, sinks, and water fountains.
Replenish supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and soap in all dispenser locations.
Move and arrange furniture, patient wardrobes, beds, and other items to facilitate cleaning tasks.
Provide bed‑making services: clean mattresses, springs, bed frames, bedside stands, over‑bed lights, blood pressure cuffs, and bed tables in patient rooms.
Remove soiled textiles from patient rooms, load and unload clean textiles from bulk carts, and restock clean textile closets, cabinets, shelves, and carts while participating in inventory management.
Defrost and clean patient‑care refrigerators and ice machines; clean stainless‑steel apparatus cabinets, counters, elevators, lobbies, wards, diet‑kitchens, and nurse utility rooms; clean ashtrays, smoke stands, sand urns, and water fountains.
Clean windows, window ledges, glass doors, and other glass surfaces; replace curtains and clean blinds.
Clean and/or replace needle boxes and periodically clean specific non‑critical reusable medical equipment in inpatient and clinical areas.
Assist a Compensated Work Therapy worker and perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule
Weekdays / weekends / holidays. Hospital location schedules vary: Palo Alto (6:00 am–2:30 pm or 10:00 pm–6:30 am), Menlo Park (6:00 am–2:30 pm), Livermore (6:00 am–2:30 pm).
Physical Requirements
Continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, pushing. Occasionally handle heavy powered cleaning equipment weighing over 50 lb. Requires dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination and visual acuity to detect dirt and debris.
Working Conditions
Indoor work with adequate heat, light, and ventilation; occasional outdoor work exposing to varying temperatures and weather. PPE may be required due to exposure to contagious diseases, blood, and bodily fluids. Use of ladders and high‑weight equipment requires careful handling.
Requirements
Conditions of employment include U.S. citizenship (or eligible non‑citizens), suitability for federal employment, background investigation, drug screening, Selective Services registration, completion of an online onboarding process, and submission of required documents. Applicants must also serve a one‑year probationary period during which performance and conduct are evaluated for continued employment. Probation may be terminated if the employee does not advance the public interest.

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and ability to perform all duties, supported by detailed descriptions in their resume. No specific length of training required, but evidence of sufficient scope and quality is essential. Screening will first evaluate a minimum qualification element; additional job elements include Dexterity and Safety, Follow Directions, Handle Weights and Loads, Reliability and Dependability, and Special Aptitude – Housekeeping Work. Experience may be paid, unpaid, or volunteer, and will be credited accordingly. Applicants with more than the minimum qualifications are preferred. The position has no mandatory education requirement.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all Employee; face masks are required when an exemption is granted. Eligibility for benefits depends on full‑time status; additional benefits are available to federal employees.
