Pay Range : $28.05 – $42.10

Responsibilities A Radiation Safety Specialist provides support services to the Radiation Safety Officer of Advocate Health. This individual will perform a variety of tasks for AH facilities that are required by the applicable state Radiation Protection Section, the Joint Commission, and other regulatory agencies. Duties focus on regulatory issues related to radiation protection and the management of radioactive materials.

Dosimetry Program Management: distribution, record management, and collection of radiation monitoring devices; review of personnel monitoring reports and recordkeeping; notification of high readings and completion of investigations; counseling of pregnant radiation workers.

X‑Ray Physics Testing: regular scheduled measurements according to state and Joint Commission standards; notification of equipment deficiencies and maintenance of records.

Radioactive Waste Management: ongoing management and inventory of radioactive waste, contamination and exposure surveys, processing for disposal, and recordkeeping.

Regulatory Audits: routine audits of Nuclear Medicine, PET, research labs, and Radiation Oncology at Advocate Health Charlotte and outlying facilities.

Receipt and Shipment of Radioactive Materials: check‑in or shipment surveys, preparation of shipments per DOT regulations, and recordkeeping.

Assist RSO or medical physicist with physics testing of Nuclear Medicine, PET, CT, and MRI for ACR accreditation programs.

Provide independent radiation safety services to AH facilities as directed by RSO or delegate.

Provide resources and guidance to employees on matters of radiation safety.

Assist in clinical procedures or research projects: support of Radiopharmaceutical therapy, Nuclear Medicine, Special Procedures, and regulatory file maintenance.

Provide support for regulatory inspections from several agencies and assist safety drills or exercises directed by emergency services.

Assist department Quality Assurance and Compliance Coordinator in ongoing QA process related to radiation safety.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education : Graduate of an accredited 2‑year program in Radiologic Technology, Nuclear Medicine Technology or Radiation Therapy.

Certification / License : ARRT or CNMT.

Work Experience : Minimum of three years’ experience required.

Physical Requirements : Moderate to heavy physical effort lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies; unrestricted walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling and lifting; able to read and understand patient orders and technical materials; motor coordination for heavy equipment; intact sense of sight and hearing up to 20 feet.

Preferred Job Requirements

Education : Bachelor’s Degree preferred; focus on Health Physics, Medical Physics, Radiological Health, Radiologic Technology or related field.

Certification / License :

Certified Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics

Certified Medical Health Physicist by the American Board of Medical Physicists

Certified Diagnostic Medical Physicist by the American Board of Radiology
