RESP-NET Medical Record Abstractor - HP I - Communicable Disease Branch
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment seeks a Medical Record Abstractor to support surveillance of COVID‑19, influenza, and RSV hospitalizations in Colorado. The role works closely with epidemiologists, data managers, and hospital medical record staff to abstract, validate, and enter high‑quality data into central databases.
About the Position The position is full‑time and mid‑senior level. It requires 4+ years of experience in public health, health data management, or medical record abstraction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred qualifications include state work experience, experience abstracting from electronic medical records, and familiarity with REDCap or EpiTrax.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct enhanced case surveillance for COVID‑19, RSV, and influenza hospitalizations by performing in‑depth medical record reviews using standardized data collection forms.
Abstract medical information from electronic medical records according to specific instructions and enter data into central databases.
Track reported cases, complete record reviews, and participate in data cleaning. Request copies of medical records directly from hospitals when warranted.
Validate data marked as possibly erroneous and correct missing or incorrect data from record abstraction or data entry.
Identify data quality issues in reporting sources and assist in developing flexible solutions to resolve the problems.
Serve as a liaison between the Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response and hospital medical record departments, providing training and clarification of case report forms.
Qualifications
Four (4) years of experience in public health, communicable disease control, surveillance, health data management, or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Combination of related education in public health, biology, statistics, biostatistics, or epidemiology equal to four (4) years of experience.
Pre‑employment background check and willingness to travel for training, conferences, or hospitals.
Ability to work in delayed start, early release, or closure situations and be available in emergencies or Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) activations.
