Role

Role Description:

The primary responsibility of a

Senior Supplier Development Engineer

is to serve as the trusted advisor for the assigned supply base through the following functional responsibilities: assessing potential suppliers via on-site quality audits, driving implementation of Lean, BIQ, & APQP, assuring production readiness through rigorous review of supplier PPAP submission, and being recognized as an expert in supplier quality.

What you will do

Collaborate with suppliers and engineering to assure proper process control standards are in place and continuously monitor key manufacturing processes for improvement opportunities.

Document Process Changes (PCN) with clear scope of process as is and after introduction of proposed change. Establish effective validation requirements and evaluate Cpk / Ppk validation data.

Provide technical support during start-up activities and ongoing strategic support.

Review APQP documentation (e.g., Process FMEA, Process Control Plans, Gage R&R). Participate in process FMEA for suppliers’ manufacturing processes.

Generate reports on supplier quality by monitoring defect rates and areas that can lead to potential flaws; guide suppliers to reduce these defect rates.

Resolve problems between supplier and plants, suppliers, and engineering personnel, and between facilities.

Research and assess potential vendors, evaluating their manufacturing environment, practices, and procedures. Conduct supplier quality control audits to ensure compliance with organizational and federal policies and standards.

Coordinate with engineering on Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD), New Product Introduction (NPI), and Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) teams; verify design to production, engineering changes, deviations, supplier designs, and specification approvals.

Support suppliers in improving their performance through process enhancements, implementing process controls, and developing quality assurance plans.

Process Improvement:

Ability to evaluate current product quality and production methods and focus on continuous improvement of processes, products and services.

Quality Orientation:

Knowledge of quality management methods, tools, and techniques; ability to create and support an environment that meets quality goals.

Production Part Approval Process (PPAP):

Knowledge of PPAP elements, submissions, and objectives; ability to determine whether a supplier can manufacture products that meet quality requirements consistently.

Supplier Management - MFG:

Knowledge of processes and methods to manage relationships with suppliers of raw materials or components; ability to apply knowledge in practice.

Education

Bachelor’s degree related to Quality, Engineering/Technology, OR relevant professional experience

Top Candidates will also have

Masters degree related to Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, or relevant field.

American Society for Quality (ASQ) quality certification.

Experience with metal forming, fabrications, casting and machining processes.

Additional Information

This position requires travel up to 25% of the time. Domestic travel in the U.S. primarily, potentially some international travel.

This is an on-site position available in Lafayette, IN; Mossville, IL (Building AC); Griffin, GA; or Seguin, TX.

This position requires working onsite five days a week.

Summary Pay Range $126,000.00 - $189,000.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors such as job level, location, knowledge, skills, and experience. Salary is one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
