CMES, Inc. is seeking a CFO to direct and oversee the financial activities of the company, direct the preparation of current financial reports and summaries, and create forecasts predicting future growth. The CFO is a key member of the executive leadership team that plays a critical role in developing financial strategies to support the company’s strategic objectives and growth in a competitive industry.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

Lead long-range financial planning and earnings forecast aligned with project timelines.

Manage capital structure, bonding capacity, and financing for scalable growth.

Support strategic decisions identifying target markets: M&A, joint ventures, market entry, geographical expansion.

Oversee Controller and Accounting management, along with WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition (ASC 606).

Monitor corporate and project-level cash flow, retention, and distributions.

Oversee compliance for cost control systems and protecting project margins.

Review contract terms for financial exposure: retainage, escalation, LDs.

Manage insurance and bonding requirements (builder’s risk, wrap-ups, surety bonds).

Ensure GAAP compliance, audit readiness, and lender/surety reporting.

Operational Integration & Technology

Champion ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista) and integrate with field tools (e.g., Procore, HCSS).

Oversee Controller and compliance with job cost tracking and approval workflows.

Deliver real-time dashboards and corporate KPIs for leverage, liquidity, and performance.

Stakeholder Relations

Maintain strong relationships with banks, bonding agents, and external auditors.

Provide clear, timely reporting to boards, officers and Leadership Team.

Support major contract negotiations with financial risk analysis.

Team & Culture Development

Build a high-performance finance team with construction-specific skills.

Promote alignment between finance and all other departments.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, field required.

Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience with at least 5 years being in the construction industry. Heavy civil highway industry preferred.

Strong knowledge of construction accounting and job costing.

Proven experience in leading financial strategy and operations for a privately held business. Experience working with construction ERP systems (e.g. Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300, or similar). Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate.

High integrity and commitment to ethical financial stewardship.

Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.

Ability to follow and adhere to established safety procedures.

Knowledge of DOT-funded project requirements and public infrastructure contracts preferred.

Salary Range $180,000 - $220,000
