Assistant Professor of Biological Oceanography
Open until filled. Priority screening January 20, 2026. Appointment Fall 2026. Tenure‑track at Assistant Professor level. Requires commitment to teaching and training in biological oceanography with interdisciplinary specialization in population modeling, remote sensing, biogeochemistry, spatial modeling, or climate modeling.
Pay range: $90,000–$95,000 per year. Base pay $90,000.00–$95,000.00 per year.
Responsibilities
Teach primarily undergraduate courses (12 units/semester including up to 3 units for mentoring undergraduate and masters student research). Courses will include Introduction to Oceanography (MSCI 270), Biological and Physical Oceanography (MSCI 370), and the senior‑level Biological Oceanography Projects (MSCI 472).
Employ innovative teaching and learning techniques that engage students through technology, hands‑on experience, and problem solving.
Include undergraduate and masters students in research or applied science programs.
Advise and mentor undergraduate and masters students in academics, capstone projects, internships, and post‑degree career options.
Mentor both undergraduate capstone projects and masters student theses.
Play a collaborative role in integrating science and policy‑relevant scholarship into ongoing interdisciplinary research and teaching programs of CSUMB.
Develop professional relationships with regional marine science education/research institutions, federal, state, local marine policy/management agencies, non‑profit groups, schools, and other marine stakeholders.
Sustain innovative and extramurally‑funded research in marine science, leading to publications and professional visibility.
Contribute to Department, College, and University‑wide governance through participation at faculty meetings and committee work.
Help implement the goals of the College of Science and the CSUMB Vision.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Oceanography, Fisheries, Biology, Marine Science, Marine Ecology, or related field by appointment.
Demonstrated excellence in facilitating learning at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
Publication record in field of expertise.
Capacity to develop a research program focused on the oceanography of Central California marine environments.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability and desire to mentor and teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Track record of applying population models, climate models, oceanographic instrumentation, or other state‑of‑the‑art technologies to applied research questions.
Demonstrated ability to integrate research into undergraduate education.
Experience in course and/or curriculum development.
Success in securing external funding to support research, including undergraduate student research.
Special Conditions of Employment
Offers contingent upon successful completion of background check.
Duty to report to Campus Title IX Officer and comply with CSU Executive Orders EO 1095–1097.
Mandated reporter under California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
Required to maintain confidentiality per FERPA and California Education Code Chapter 13.

Compensation
Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $7,500 to $7,917 per month ($90,000–$95,000 annual). Salary determined by scope, qualifications, budget, equity, and systemwide pay.
