Senior Accountant / Accountant Trainee (NY HELPS)
Join the New York State Thruway Authority as a Senior Accountant or Accountant Trainee under the NY HELPS program, which allows non-competitive appointments for qualified candidates.
Base Pay Range Senior Accountant: $58,809 – $98,409 per year Accountant Trainee 1: $51,809 – $57,751 per year Accountant Trainee 2: $57,751 – $64,427 per year
Responsibilities
Assist the Associate Accountant with pre-implementation audits of salary raises and step advances.
Audit semiannual bonus and sick incentive payments, verifying amount and eligibility.
Audit annual snow and ice payments, verifying amount and eligibility.
Annually calculate employee health insurance contributions.
Audit annual billings from the Department of Civil Service for reasonableness.
Verify promotional payments for employees as requested by Salary Administration or Payroll.
Travel to different Thruway Divisions to perform inventory field audits.
Communicate with other departments and agencies.
Prepare work papers using Excel and Word to document audit findings on the Summary Audit Report for all audits performed.
Complete special assignments and other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Director of Fiscal Audit.
Qualifications
Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service allocated to a Grade 12 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1, 70.4, or Section 52.6 of the NYS Civil Service Law.
Accountant Trainee 1: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation; or bachelor’s degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses.
Accountant Trainee 2: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation; or bachelor’s degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and one year of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, responsible for the full range of accounting system activities.
Senior Accountant: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation or bachelor’s degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and two years of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, responsible for the full range of accounting system activities.
Substitution: Master’s degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation may substitute for required years of experience.
