Job Description Accountable for ensuring proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of items admitted as evidence. Releases evidence to/from authorized parties or disposes of evidence as appropriate and tracks evidence transfers.

Responsibilities

Receives evidence and ensures proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping; reviews items before acceptance; verifies submitters’ information; logs evidence; organizes internal routing; releases and transports evidence to chemist.

Interfaces with submitting agencies and courts; answers routine inquiries regarding status of evidence in analytical process; refers other inquiries; receives court standbys and advises Chemist and Physician.

Maintains detailed records and active quality control/assurance programs; assists in evidence audits; documents validity and quality of evidence handling process, ensuring legal compliance.

Develops written evidence handling procedures.

Cleans, organizes, secures evidence storage area; properly stores items maximizing space.

Assists with functions in other sections by answering telephones, filing, preparing and sending evidence to reference laboratories, and assisting with laboratory billing functions.

Performs other duties as assigned and required by department.

Qualifications Education, Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program. Three (3) years of clerical or record keeping work related experience or 45 hours of college credit or combination of the two.

Special Requirements

Ability to communicate effectively and maintain professional relationships with others.

Ability to maintain accurate records and operate a personal computer.

Must possess knowledge of chemical and biological safe handling procedures.

Must pass criminal background check.

Mandatory drug test prior to and during employment.

Physical/Environmental Requirements Routinely required to work in areas with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. Requires manual dexterity, mobility, and visual acuity sufficient to receive, transport, store, and release evidence. Requires moderate lifting. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
